His buildings at Southampton uni are more like "cooked" though...

Yeah alright Basil Spence was cooking with this one.

Ah shit, this counts as an Internet Thing™ doesn't it :/

Current project is to replace the brains of that big PDU. It needed a recap, but once I did that the main controller stopped talking to the relay boards reliably :<

Anyway here's my code talking to it instead. Satisfying clicks and clunks :3

Sinning at Gloucester cathedral for #FursuitFriday
It rained on the parade after so I guess I angered god...

I only have two cat pictures on my phone 😭 making up the numbers with a goose and a dragon I hope that's ok. Sending lots of hugs too 💙

Back on my ~enterprise grade~ bullshit

Anyway we make it though the self test we got stuck on before, and get the BOP 🎶 test done too.

There's no "hooray self test passed!!!" screen unfortunately. You'll just have to trust me when I say it passed ^_^

I'll put the case back together in the morning 😴

🎉🎉🎉 looks like the receiver is working now. I was able to send data from my PC

Oscillator setup is a bit janky. They've got load caps slung on the bottom of the board.

The crystal collection I bought from Maplin as a teenager let me down, no 1.842 MHz.

We can steal the healthy clock from the good oscillator with a bodge wire for now
June 8, 2025 at 10:44 PM
B side oscillator has its crystal sat next to the leaky battery.

Popped it off, the crystal has corrosion on it.

Looks like the hermetic seal is compromised, which will kill the crystal.

Excuse to show off the gorgeous orange VFD on this frequency counter 😍

Checked the oscillators on the baud rate generators - A side is 1.8 MHz as it should be. B side is 5.2 MHz. Chippy is going way faster than its 28 little legs can carry it 🫨

Turns out the clock can come from either an external input ‽, or from one of the 65C51 UARTs, used as a baud generator.

News to me, but modems sometimes provide external clocks. I guess that makes sense if the line has lots of jitter?
June 8, 2025 at 10:35 PM
Probed round the UART again. The receive clock is there, but it's 1.2 kHz. Should be 154 kHz (16x baud)
June 8, 2025 at 10:35 PM
Something isn't sitting right about the UART being bad...
Datasheet says it can pull 1.25 W which is enough to be warm.
Needs more investigation, but first, dinner :3

Had a scrub through the manual. I think I have it set up right. Discovered it has a self test. Running that shows a problem on channel B of the MPSC, which is where we saw the loop-back data going.

Also noticed that the UART chip is running warm. Probably dead? New one on order...
June 8, 2025 at 5:49 PM
This thing has 4 UARTs, a pair of R65C51P2s and the dual UART D7201AC. Why so many UARTs???

Poked around and confirmed the data is coming from the 7201's A port, and appears at the B port if I add loopback. Good, the relays and MAX232s are working. Maybe it's software issues?

I can get it to turn on and start sending "The Quick Brown Fox". Looks credible on the scope. Tried loopback and also sending data from the PC but it won't receive anything though. That's as far as I've got so far

A search for the RS Datascope is fruitless, but inside we find the OEM was Componodex Ltd. And they call it the Fakerscope 2000.

IA turns up the manual for the Fakerscope 2500, and YouTube turns up a video with some basic info.

I cheated and made a start already. There was a leaky PCB mount backup battery in here, and a completely dead 6xAA Ni-MH pack that it runs from.
I replaced that with a 3S Li-ion pack I hacked together (glued in the lid)

Saved this widget from the skip. Seems to be for talking to and diagnosing serial ports. Gonna have a go bringing it to life

Thankfully the garden survived us being away for CFz. Feels like everything's twice as tall as last week!

Cheapo irrigation pumps did the job for the greenhouse quite well 💦
