Can we make sure that every new house has a heat pump and EV provision? Just watched thousands of new homes built in Milton with gas furnaces while the province offers programs to convert them all to heat pumps. Chance to do it from the get go this time?

I suspect that’s the reason for the difference you are hearing. There is likely more to it than that but I’m a bit out of date these days.

The sound is more pronounced on older vehicles. Newer designs will control the switching frequency differently, not using fixed changing points and higher frequencies which are then less noticeable.

The “gear changing” sound you hear is the result of the power electronics controller changing the switching frequency of the electrical power devices as the vehicle accelerates. It’s adjusting to provide the optimum electrical waveform to the electric motors for any given speed, load situation.

I’d come into the city much more often if it felt safer to be a pedestrian. The congestion, air pollution and right turn on red rules make it uncomfortable to walk around frankly.
