i think i would go farther and say that the plot of stormblood is driven by zenos deliberately targeting yotsuyu and fordola for manipulation and abuse and this pattern of how he treats women he interacts with is continued with zero, while being notably absent w fandaniel (the main man he talks to)

like stormblood is kind of like. in large part reckoning with misogynistic abuse. it's not always written well (yotsuyu) but it's omnipresent thematically and zenos is a major participant in and driver of the themes. it's even in the 50-60 rdm quests a bit (arya is kidnapped bc of a plan by zenos)

she didn't make the decision but she realizes her potential to make it, feels that it's wrong in some way, is given the chance to not repeat that mistake, and as far as I've seen is working to not do so...the brainworms....

and that's not to clear real sphene of guilt, it's just interesting to me. real sphene might think she DID make those decisions but could it be survivors guilt/need to take responsibility for the pain an image of her caused her people&the people of someone she's come to consider an ally? who knows!!

who's to say eternal sphene wasn't similarly influenced as simulant sphene.... even IF real sphene had the potential to make those same decisions, the real sphene we see does struggle with it a bit. not in any real or material way but it's enough to give me brain worms

like was it REALLY her decision? if simulant sphene is still sphene and has all her memories and personalities but she was created to fulfill calyx's purpose. iirc eternal sphene was also Made eternal by the same kind of organization even if it was in different circumstances

im basically copy pasting my conversation w/mer about this but hhh i like the possibility that endless sphene kind of didnt actually have a choice in the matter. it doesnt make her any less culpable but! its interesting how they chose to handle it especially after introducing calyx-controlled sphene
