Ganzan Daishi was a real person who lived in Japan about 1,000 years ago. His real name was Ryogen. He was the head of a powerful Buddhist sect, but his actions aligned him with the clans that controlled the Japanese government at the time.

Amulets of Ganzan Daishi is said to be effective in warding off evil spirits, and the statue at Jindaiji is huge and has a devilish, scary face, so it seems particularly effective.😅
