Outside of a book or the kitchen, I have no idea what I’m doing. Cannonball Read’s self-appointed cruise director
When I was 8 or 9 (a million years ago), my dad built me a Mr Peanut costume out of plywood and covered it with fabric that he painted to look like a cartoon peanut shell. I found a top hat and made a monocle. I loved it, but it is long gone.

This my late father with Mango, a blind horse, who was “subtly” trying to steal his lunch.

My haul from the bookstore. I finally picked up my preorder of Liz Gotauco’s F*cked Up Fairy Tales and then I needed a couple more books - Nadine Gonzalez’ Only Lovers in the Building and Janine Amesta’s Love at First Flight. We read Latine books all year.

A lot is terrible so I am experimenting with chocolate sourdough starter. This is my first loaf from the starter. I’m pleased.

I’ve always liked Charlie Jane Anders’ writing, but I bonded with Lessons in Magic and Disaster. My full review -> cannonballread.com/2025/08/less...

I’m trying a new sourdough sandwich loaf recipe. It’s part whole wheat. I baked one loaf in the Pullman pan and one in a regular loaf pan.

I enjoyed this so much and so many of the things that I loved are spoilers. What I can say is that I did not struggle to read ZomRomCom the way I’ve struggled with some other books this year. cannonballread.com/2025/08/zomr...

This book is full of hope and community. It’s also about building a life when you have been granted rights, but not citizenship. In a precarious situation, the robots create a sanctuary for themselves, and extend it to others, humans and robots. I’m going to own Automatic Noodle in all formats.

Out today! All Superheroes Need PR is so delightfully unhinged. Don’t mistake unhinged for thoughtless, because Elizabeth Stephens knows her craft. The characters and plot may lack hinges, but they are well structured.

If you are looking for a retelling to read on Sherlock Holmes Day, I would recommend Marie Howalt’s A Study in Black Brew. It’s a scifi setting, on a queer-normative world with multiple species. No dogs are harmed and the disability rep is excellent.

Tarah DeWitt’s Left of Forever, is a lovely second chance after divorce romance. Left of Forever has big heaps of yearning and one of my favorite microtropes, a man who goes to therapy. Out today.

It's Library Week and I want to share a few favorites fictional librarians and a few favorite books written by actual librarians! And then I want you to contact your congress people and tell them to support libraries and stop the gutting of the Institute of Museum and Library Services!

KB Brookins’ pretty a memoir deserves all my time and attention. I’m enjoying it. What are you reading on this Trans Day of Visibility? #Booksky

Looking through some pictures and came across this one - my parents on their wedding day. They look very happy. I love this picture, but I don’t think I ever saw them smile at each other with such un-encumbered joy.

I think it’s an important part of pushing back on the harms this administration is seeking to cause. Things like reminding people that Canada and Greenland are not our enemies.

I am in the process of acquiring physical copies of books I love and don’t want to lose if there is a digital purge. My most recent batch of orders arrived today. #booksky

Emily’s elderly dog, Shadow, plays a big role in this installment (he’s fine), and it made me think about my former dog, Spike, who would never be so helpful. Here he is, peaking from behind me after starting shit with bigger dogs

It took me a minute to get into the rhythm of this third installment. I love the journal entry format, but it puts me at a remove when I start reading. Once I settled in, I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I love Emily’s competence and her belief in herself. Out tomorrow.

In a Rush by Kate Canterbary is out today. It’s fun, sex positive, and has big I’ll take care of that for you energy.

I enjoyed everything about this - the plot you only find in a rom com, the emotional truth laid bare, and the narrators who added more layers of warmth and humor with their performances.

I just got this gorgeous arc in my email. I can’t wait to read it. A.H. Cunningham’s Out of Office was a favorite last year.
