RoboFist 3.0 : You Can [Not] Be Relevant Again

Former "local culture anthropologist" crawling back to social media for the first time in three years, pitifully seeking validation from strangers by yapping into the abyss.
10. Dragon Quest XI S
☆☆☆☆☆

Wow.

Spent about 170 hours in Erdrea. By the time I hit the true ending, I had goosebumps, watery eyes, and a MUCH stronger love for DQIII (hell, for DQ as a whole).

A monumental celebration of JRPGs and the unwavering, inseparably human power of storytelling.

8. Drill Dozer
☆☆☆☆

I've beaten it before, but this is my first time replaying it WITH the secret challenge levels.

This game is one of the great puzzle platformers on the GBA. Super fun time. I mourn the timeline where GameFreak tweaked the clunky controls for a DS sequel and Jill got into Smash.

7. Pokemon Legends: Arceus
☆☆☆☆☆

Just when I thought I had outgrown Pokemon, I give this one a chance. And it's everything I always wanted a Pokemon game to be, ever since I first beat Gold as a 10-year-old.

Addicting gameplay loop. Best final boss in the series. Best Pokemon game on the Switch.

6. Shantae: Risky Revolution
☆☆☆

As a piece of gaming history, this gets a 10 out of 5!

As a GAME...eh, it's totally fine. It bridges the gap between a GBC game and a DSi one, long before Shantae found her groove in Pirate's Curse and was perfected in Seven Sirens.

A neat little curio, I guess.

5. Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake
☆☆☆☆

After 8 and Monsters, I finally felt ready.

I have a LOT of thoughts, but at the end of the day? I get it. If this is how Japanese audiences felt in 1988, I 100% understand get it.

(I'd love for future games to try the "make your own party" thing again.)

4. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
☆☆☆☆☆

Paper Mario 64 is one of my favorite games. I tried TTYD back on the 'cube ages ago, but it didn't grab me then.

Now? Dang, this is a hell of a sequel. Not just in scope, but gameplay as well. Hilarious, heartfelt, ADORE the sidekicks.

I get the hype.

3. Okami
☆☆☆☆

This is the second time I've beaten this little masterpiece. The sequel teaser got me hungry again.

Okami overflows with charm and joy. Ammy controls like a dream, the world is a blast to explore, the the score is GORGEOUS.

It's a breezy epic. Just pure fun.

2. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
☆☆☆☆☆

I was on a Castlevania kick, y'see.

I'd heard that some consider this to be the best Metroidvania in the series. I held off playing it because I'm a Belmont purist, but OoE convinced me to give it a shot.

Yeah...I was SHOCKED by how great it was. Near perfect.

The biggest problem I've always had with the Metroid fanbase is that they want every new game to just be glorified ports of Super and Prime 1.

The Jim Henson x General Mills Monster Cereal Muppet collab bowls arrived this morning! It would've been a Halloween miracle!

...but Count Chocula didn't make it...

I didn't know they were ceramic! Looks like Franken and Boo are chilling with the good china until a new Count gets here.

Happy belated anniversary to what may very well be my favorite video game franchise.

1. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

This might be a contender for my favorite damn game of all time.

The hype is dead now, sure, but the game's "EVERYONE IS HERE" thesis felt like a historical celebration, a reward for those who stuck through, and a strangely emotional finale all rolled into one.

2. Metroid Dread

I love Metroid.

I love how quickly MercurySteam was able to remind me just how much I love Metroid.

I love that Sakamoto still gave us a story worth telling and a nuanced heroine worth celebrating.

I love how long it took to get the Morph Ball.

I love this game, man.

3. Pokemon Legends: Arceus

I never thought I'd put a Pokemon game on a top 10 list in the year of our lord 2025. It's EXACTLY what I wanted Pokemon to evolve into when I first beat Red on Mt. Silver as a little 10-year-old.

Nothing Pokemon has done in the last decade has come anywhere close.

4. Dragon Quest XI S

I haven't beaten it (I'm at the 90-hour mark) and I'm in no rush to. Erdrea is such a joy to explore.

Crafting is a brilliant minigame. The core cast of characters are so fully realized. High epic fantasy meets chill vibes.

If it sticks the landing, it MIGHT beat out DQ8...

5. Super Mario Odyssey

I don't know if I find anything bad about this game. I've seen people hate on the amount of Moons, the level sizes, or the limitations of the Cappy mechanic, and I just don't get it.

The movement, the creatures, the exploration, all of it is 100% grade-A Super Mario charm.

6. Super Mario RPG

I never in a million years thought I'd see SMRPG get such a GORGEOUS new coat of HD paint.

It's quaint at times, sure, but as someone who adored Paper Mario 64 as a kid, seeing its origins was something really special. It's charming as hell.

That Geno guy should be in Smash...

7. Emio the Smiling Man

I'm NOT a visual novel guy. If it's just a manga with extra steps, spare my wallet and just make it a manga, right?

But I'm also a sucker for Nintendo history, and FDC was a curiosity I couldn't ignore.

I'm still not a visual novel guy, but damn, this story GRIPPED me.

8. Splatoon 3

I'm hardly a diehard, but I'm constantly blown away by how quickly/permanently Splatoon has established itself as one of Nintendo's core franchises. I've only ever played 3, but it REALLY helped me understand the appeal.

Now it's hard to imagine a Nintendo WITHOUT Booyahs and Woomys.

9. Kirby and the Forgotten Land

I just like Kirby.

And in this game, Kirby can move across the y axis to shoot guns and play gashapon machines.

It's a grand time.

10. Ring Fit Adventure

Who knew that the easiest way for me to play a fitness game at my age would be to give my workout a "chosen hero" narrative with RPG elements and a big circular toy to play with?

It's not as addicting as DDR, but it makes my body cry more than Wii Fit ever did.

In a hilarious twist, Ice Climber has recently been voted the 87th most popular game in Japan, beating out Super Mario Odyssey, A Link to the Past, Majora's Mask, Metal Gear Solid, and every single Metroid game.

You can't fool me, Nintendo.
July 31, 2025 at 3:31 PM
Playing through Soul Calibur 2 on NSO has only strengthened my belief that it is the biggest, most egregious franchise omission in Smash Ultimate.

It was the first/only time Nintendo allowed one of its characters to cross over in a fighting game. BY NAMCO.

And we couldn't even get a Mii costume?

Make it like "Arkham Asylum meets Wind Waker." Grab a team of developers who would have fun making a superhero action/adventure title with some color. Put a real budget behind it. Make it funny, but take it seriously.

Frankly, I think he deserves it and the industry needs it.
