Got a lot tougher to win a Democratic primary after the Voting Rights Act. This was true of Strom Thurmond in 1964, as he worried aloud to a conservative journalist about his 1966 primary:

White southerners were, too. Strom Thurmond parachuted into Normandy before D-Day. Robert "Tut" Patterson was a decorated paratrooper, wrote for Neo-Nazi outlets after the war, and then founded the White Citizens' Councils. Etc.
