The same poll has confidence in the Democratic Party at 29% (6% lower than the GOP), which is a good indication that the likely vote differential is despite their performance and messaging, not because of it.

Right. Yes, this is all Trump and the Republicans' fault, obviously, but pointing that out for the past 8 years didn't stop them from beating ineffective Democrats. Replacing the neo-liberal establishment with progressive populists is our best chance to win over voters justifiably demanding change.
