This is not a surprise to anyone who was closely following this case. It *ought* to be, however, a moment to reflect upon the responsibility (or not) of media outlets that, deliberately or not, led folks to believe that a grant was a serious possibility (which it never was).

Absolutely agree (and have been screaming about this). But to be precise, they had requested a response to the petition, so there was a sign that a single justice had taken the most minimal step.

This is a perfect case study in how to frame legal news in a totally misleading way that scares people for engagement.
The actual "news" here is that the petition is scheduled for conference. Nothing about this is meaningful—*all petitions* must be considered at a conference! Almost all are denied.

Breaking: The Supreme Court is now officially considering taking up a case overturning same-sex marriage.
This is the first time in history the court has considered rolling back this right.

It's really disheartening how many people were made scared by shoddy, contextless reporting about this, and how many are thus now reading so much into this denial.

Lots of people were made unnecessarily scared by reporting that didn't add context.
And this news today is drowning out that the Court *did* grant cert in an election law case about absentee ballot timing that is going to be extremely important next year.

And House members who want to run have to be willing to give up their seats—easier sell for an open Senate seat than an uphill primary challenge.
But there's still some time to try to recruit
