if you're getting it from a reliable source, custom controllers will generally have more consistent longevity without issues. i think it's worth saving for a custom one, personally

when i deactivated a long while back, it took a couple of days, iirc. when i posted a tweet, my followers still saw it and liked it despite not being visible on my account follower tab. it should come back on its own eventually
