Our study adds to the literature challenging the idea that Latinxs rally around shared identity when targeted. Many, especially conservatives, prioritize party & ideology over group appeals. As Latinx political engagement grows, co-ethnic attacks may matter less. n/5 (end)

Even ambivalent GOP Latinxs didn’t shift when told about Trump’s anti-Latinx rhetoric or harmful COVID policies impacting the Latinx community. Support stayed firm among these Latinx respondents. n/4

Reminders didn’t shift Latinx Trump voters. Our experiment shows partisanship drives support. These voters were more conservative, anti-immigrant, & optimistic about the future. Only ambivalent Dems moved off the sidelines to Biden, suggesting group-based appeals still move some, but not all. n/3

30% of Latinxs backed Trump in 2020, consistent with past GOP support. But his anti-Latinx rhetoric & policies were unusually harsh compared to past GOP candidates. We tested whether Latinx Trump supporters would rethink their vote preferences when reminded of this. They did not. n/2
