              “Hey, are you alright?” a voice lilted it’s way to her ears past the rumble of blood and the constant shudders of barely contained revulsion.               She wanted to ignore him but Tyler rolled close to her and looked at her from over his shoulder, keeping his body turned away. Shielding himself from her.               The pain in her jaw from clenching it for the past hour was starting to take it’s toll. She felt her hands tense up. The ache in her neck returning.               “I’m fine.” She hissed. Elli bubbled with enthusiasm.

One last attempt at finding relevance in past experience reset the film and set the clicking along a new path.               As soon as the lights went down in her mental theater and the silver screen started to glow, she knew she had made a mistake in her choice of memory. The images playing across the fabric of time sent cold into her bones, twisted her stomach, and turned her limbs to lead preventing her from getting up from her seat, entering the projection room, tearing up the celluloid, and setting the theater ablaze to rid herself of the memory altogether. Movie magic and its alluring sparkle prevented that outcome and she was forced to relive this moment.               “I’m moving out. Mom is coming to get me tomorrow.” Melissa said from the third step. She was too scared to descend all the way into the basement. Worried if she got closer to him, within arm’s reach, she’d lose her nerve or that he’d hold onto her preventing her from escaping.               He didn’t turn to meet her gaze or her words.               “Alright.”

“Kentucky Mule or Moscow?” The bartender had asked. “Moscow. Two.” Evan replied holding up two fingers. “Is that the one with ginger beer?” Doug asked. “Yeah.” Melissa said swirling her drink. The image of her brother persisting in the empty chair next to the man chewing the shrimp and tossing the tails into an ashtray. “How’s dad?” Melissa had asked. “Why do you care?” Evan had responded. “I’ve actually never had one.” Doug said. “It’s refreshing.” Melissa said lazily.

The fallout, in the form of Melissa and Elli teaming up to accost Emily for her slights, would come a day later. The news of Bethany’s “incarceration” having spread, Emily was devising her next revenge on the girl whose only crime was being the target of Emily’s hormonal ire.               “I’ll get her address and send her my bloody fucking tampons! I’ll call in a bomb threat to the academy and say I’m her! I’ll…” Emily was raving when Melissa slapped her.               She slapped her so fucking hard Elli had her first orgasm. Emily couldn’t speak, she didn’t even cry. Melissa wanted to yell, wanted to tear Emily to shreds, lay out all the evil deeds she had done, that she had made Melissa do but, Melissa knew she wasn’t forced to do those things. She went along, participated, laughed about it when it was happening, didn’t raise a hand until the only consequence was losing her friend, even though that was the only consequence the entire time. So instead of being a perpetual coward and a hypocrite she slapped Emily one more time before storming out of her house. Emily didn’t talk to Melissa again after that, but she didn’t mess with Bethany again either.

“You know they deserve it. Look at them, wasting away. Polluting the air with their filth.” Images flashed over Melissa’s mind as her eyes were forced open to see the others on her shift milling about, spending yet another night on this dark earth withering away. She clamped her eyes shut as her pulse quickened. A flash of red eclipsed her thoughts as Elli came up behind her and whispered in her ear. The small hairs on Melissa’s neck stood on end, wishing they were porcupine quills to defend her from the ghoul in her presence. “One day, you’ll do it. One day.” Elli hissed.

“I can’t wait.” Melissa said with a big smile. Her mind letting go of finding the memory of a concert attended in the past 6 years. Was that a loose end? Reconciling with a life that was consumed by work and bereft of a social life? The idea that she’d blink and be 50 years old without a past to recollect had only crossed her mind a few times but now, trying to remember something fun she had done, something substantial she had done in the past five years made her wonder if that future wasn’t set in stone. Was the pact the only way to break that cycle? It seemed that way. Something drastic to break the wheel. To set in motion a new future. One that had a hard end; an end that was in sight from where she sat now. Peace, redemption, solace, death.

Align - Synchronize
It took thirty long seconds for him to finally gasp. The bewildered look on his face after gasping for air and realigning himself with the horizon was replaced by a look of stunned relief almost glee at the successful brush with death; successful in that he didn’t die nor had lost a limb. That satisfaction would not last long as he became aware of a new agent of death standing above him, teeth bared with a seething rasp of inhaled air. The fear in his eyes at Melissa towering over him with Elli’s eyes piercing through to his soft squishy center full of Saturday morning cartoons, sugary cereal, and baby fat he just couldn’t seem to rid himself of was eclipsed by the explosion of vitriol spewed forth from the depths of Melissa. A sight that was second only to the breaking of She’s All That, the birth of Elli and the first crack formed in the sibling bond.

The day Melissa’s brother broke her copy of She’s All That, Elli was born. When she was 13, Elli was too. The malicious manifestation of her hatred towards her brother, the personification of hateful malcontent, the dark side to Melissa. The voice in her head that told her to put gum in her brother’s hair, or trip him on the stairs. The tightlipped smile that appeared in the corner of her eye when her brother was sick or getting yelled at by her parents for something she had done and framed him for. The desire in her to see him fail or get hurt or cry. Elli was all that. Over the years Elli had become the suppressed feelings of disdain Melissa had towards her fellow man, poking her head up out of the darkness when something deep was stirred. Most days she was dormant. Even days, like in traffic, she was asleep. But now, sitting in the dark of the office Elli was a grotesque facsimile of Melissa. Pale, with short white/grey hair, hollow eyes, and a smile that would give Smile.dog nightmares.

“I still love you.” The lie that echoed through time. That which increased the pressure inside Melissa’s heart.               The film reel stopped the lights came on and Melissa looking down at her hands felt a drop of wetness hit her palm. She was crying.               Turned out she had no good path to dealing with confrontation. Violence, explosive words, tears. Those were her avenues and all led to the same place, being alone.               Under the fluorescent lights she turned her face to the side to catch a glimpse of the man in the seat next to her. All she could see were his hands tapping away at a song in his head, off time no doubt. She could feel the smile peel across his lips, one of genuine joy, a fabrication of her fragile mind.

She wasn’t sure if it was from the idea itself or the inclusion of alcohol fueling her confusion. “It’s like this, look at that guy over there.” Kage pointed his drink hand towards the crowd. A young guy in a white polo and cargo pants was dancing along to Ke$ha’s Tik Tok, swaying back and forth without a care in the world. “How do you know that that guy is a person?” “What else would he be?” “A zombie with no brain, an android with faulty programming, a figment of your imagination.” “An NPC.”

Another lull in the conversation and she felt her body start to sweat. Think of something to say you idiot! If I were him I’d be wondering why my date isn’t such a limp noodle!               Her saving grace was her phone ringing.               “Oh, sorry, let me check this.” Melissa got up from her seat and pulled her phone from her pocket.                 “I’ll be here.” Aaron said.               She stepped towards the open front door and looked at the screen, her blood ran cold in her veins.               “Oh god.”               DAD flashed on the screen. She stared at her phone for ten seconds before the call ended and the screen went blank. His voice boomed in her head: “Why haven’t you called me back!? You never reach out to me. If I didn’t call you I’d never hear from you!”

The first most prominent confrontation that surfaced from the clicking movie reel was when she was 17 and Emily Harris had made it her personal mission to get a girl in their grade to “do something drastic” was her way of putting it. Melissa and Elli saw it for what it was; Emily wanted to hold that girl’s life in her hands. The summer before Em had been obsessed with Heathers and Jawbreakers and Mean Girls (despite the lack of murder between friends) and an evil bug crawled into her ass to try and replicate it, even if it was just a touch removed from actually committing a murder. Psychological warfare on Bethany Bergman or Jason Redfield was fair game, and as her best friend in the group of toss haired scene girls attempting to “run” the school in a warped alt-version of The Plastics, Melissa was meant to play along with all the antics.
