Here's the other problem: as @climateactiontracker.org point out in the report Gates' staffers either didn't read or chose to ignore - the shifting projections from 'bad' to 'less bad' STOPPED SHIFTING after covid and MIGHT BE SHIFTING BACK TOWARDS MORE BAD

Yes, NZ penalty is $45/g, Aus A$100, EU 95 euro. No penalties will be paid for a while as ironically there are heaps of credits left over from 2023.

Note that hybrid cars at 110 gCO2/km themselves only just meet the standard of 112.6g, so shifting petrol sales to hybrid won't help. To meet the standard requires e.g. lifting monthly BEV sales from 664 to 2510 and PHEV sales from 585 to 1585.

I'm not certain – as far as I know long-run daily data is not publicly available. Would be worth asking the Electricity Authority. The previous lowest quarter for coal was Q4 2022, which averaged 1.3 GWh per day – we are sure to beat that this year.

That can't be the endgame but at least we are heading in the right direction and it will shake things up a bit.

At these levels it doesn't prop up the price which has been averaging 3c/kWh lately – was over 20c earlier in the winter. I think we will be entering a new regime of longer and longer fossil-free periods; generators will only be able to make money during during "shortages".
