Really happy for (and a little jealous of) my in-laws, who live in Seattle. They just got rid of their centrist mayor in favor of a progressive with plans to address homelessness, tax the wealthy, and a commitment to safer streets for people who get around without a car.
Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell just conceded to progressive challenger Katie Wilson at a ceremony at City Hall.

Wilson won by about 2,000 votes in a close race.

Democrats are such cowards. It’s not shocking each time they show their true colors but it’s truly incredible how readily they sell out any and everyone.

Being more responsive to his constituents than anyone else in City Hall, unapologetically progressive, and unafraid to speak out against the conservative forces holding our city back. Taken together, that’s how you put up these kinds of numbers.
Thank you, Ward 9! We earned 77.37% of the vote, and we are heading back to City Hall with a mandate.

Sorry for cringe-posting, but I believe there’s real value in the politics of joy.

The Frey Guys just seem like genuinely miserable people who think it’s edgy and funny to be assholes without a care as to whether you like them or not. I imagine that attitude comes from the top-down.
Also the manager of team Minneapolis has spoken

This is embarrassing. Mayor Frey is propping up anti-labor candidates and this should be disqualifying.

It’s time for new leadership. Leadership that will support labor and workers.
Barf. Here's the "Team Mpls" plan to “address climate change.” No mention of getting off fossil fuels. Nothing on electrification. Nothing on renewable energy, transit or building housing near transit. Just trees and carbon capture(?). This fluff could have been written by the Koch Bros (1/2)

I live amongst Frey’s base (W13, Linden Hills). Caveat that signs don’t vote, but Jazz by far has the most, and there are more Fateh+Davis than Frey. Six months ago I would have thought that was impossible. So I’m cautiously optimistic!

I also think we hold the majority on council at net zero.
How’re you guys in Minneapolis feeling about Tuesday? Based on his staff’s posting it seems like Frey is way more nervous than he’s been in previous elections.

I agree with what everyone else has said regarding how gross and dumb this is.

But my first thought when I saw it was that Soren is probably in a very good place if this is Josh’s closing argument a week before Election Day.
When I moved to Minneapolis in the mid-aughts, it was really difficult to make friends. People from other states didn’t get it.

Now the bias is front and center in my city politics. If I’m a resident who “just got here,” do I matter less to Josh?

Oof. I'm guessing Lydia answered these Qs prior to her campaign people telling her that it's bad politics to oppose policies that her voters support.

Answering "Abstain" to "Do you support the current mayoral administration's policy of encampment clearing?" is disqualifying on its own.

Not holding my breath to see whether Deena and her editors at the Strib deem it newsworthy that the City Auditor found that Frey has created an environment ripe for fraud with his resistance to oversight and accountability.

Because the mayor forgot to mention it, I’ll remind folks that he vetoed the budget for the Dinkytown lights—champion led by @robin4mpls.bsky.social— because they were a “pet project.”
In just a month, Minneapolis has:
✅ Added safety lights in Dinkytown
✅ Opened hundreds of affordable homes
✅ Fought for stronger gun laws
✅ Installed a 3rd Narcan vending machine
✅ Brought thousands downtown
✅ Ranked #1 for women’s sports

And there’s more good stuff on the way.

The government has been shut down for three weeks and Sen. Klobuchar thought, “you know what? Now seems like a good time to help the Republicans put more of their people on the federal bench.”
By a vote of 66-32, the #Senate invoked cloture on the nomination of Harold D. Mooty III to be US District Judge for the Northern District of Alabama.

Say what you will about the French but they kinda nailed it with the whole “I’m gonna jet work early, hit the patisserie, and bike around chomping baguettes and ripping a cig”
When we were in Le Mans I saw like five people walking down the street happy as hell eating demibaguettes, my envy has never been stronger
if the baguette was not meant to be chomped why is it a chompable configuration

After the Mayor vetoed the Labor Standards Board, he had a letter read out loud in our council chambers where he said he would bring a proposal forward together in January 2025 with a unified vision and that the work “doesn’t end here."

It’s October. He didn’t. He lied again.
Minneapolis is a union town! Workers deserve a living wage and an affordable home. Mayor Frey turned his back on workers when he vetoed the Labor Standards Board and proposed gutting co-enforcement. As Mayor, I'll champion workers, and ensure our workforce can stay in Minneapolis.

The way that Taylor has been out-reporting the Strib is both a massive credit to Taylor and an embarrassment to the state’s largest media outlet. The levels of completeness and factuality in Taylor’s reporting is truly impressive.

It would be nice if the editors at the Strib were paying attention.
mid september was not the first time they campaigned together. they’ve been doing this for months at public events as a unified front saying rank all 3 of us bsky.app/profile/tayl...

I’m legitimately interested to see how the election results inform the commission’s decision on this. I have my hunches.
POWER GRAB: 6-5 majority of commissioners on this work group say council shouldn't get a confirmation vote for mayor's picks for directors of public works, community planning/economic development, civil rights, health, emergency management, regulatory services, assessor.

Say what you will about Ken Martin, but in my experience he went out of his way to stay neutral, and he earned a lot of credibility from that. Carlbom and his DFL couldn’t be any further from that approach. Doesn’t seem great.
Ummmmm fucking hello??? Conflict of interest? @dfl.org does anyone there even care about the implications of this??

The thing about the mayor’s core base of support being suburbanite/out-of-state property owners and landlords is that they don’t vote here.

Betraying local entrepreneurs and small biz owners and their workers with a veto one month before Election Day… boy, I don’t know.
I shouldn’t be surprised, but as someone who had an office in my neighborhood and had it sold from one out of state landlord to another without any notice, which forced me out due to an immediate rent increase, I can not BELIEVE Frey vetoed a bill that would help local biz owners possibly avoid that

There are so many possibilities for safer, better lives when a city has a strong leader with vision and courage to try. Minneapolis . . . does not have that. But we can in just over a month.
"The main objective of these changes is to make it safer for children to walk to school by limiting car traffic. “We want Paris to regain streets where it is possible to let go of a child's hand,” said Patrick Bloche (PS), deputy mayor, at the Fête des rues aux écoles (Street Festival at Schools)."
Paris celebrated the opening of its 300th “school street”: landscaped & pedestrianized or semi-pedestrianized blocks situated in front of schools. Most have been completed since 2020.

While Trump's DOJ sues us over our separation ordinance and an ICE official emails the Chief thanking him for his cooperation, @jchavezmpls.bsky.social, @aurinmpls.bsky.social, and @aishaforward10.com are doing the work to make our separation ordinance even stronger to protect immigrant neighbors.
The suit, which names Minnesota, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Hennepin County and top state officials, targets a number of local ordinances. Some of the policies limit what data can be shared with federal immigration agents and when police can ask about a person’s immigration status.
Justice Department sues Minnesota over immigrant sanctuary policies
The federal lawsuit follows similar actions taken by the Department of Justice in six other jurisdictions.
