In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

60 yrs ago today (Nov 5, 1965), the 1st US government report to warn about climate change was published.
"Restoring the Quality of Our Environment" included warning of C02 build-up and sea-level rise/melting ice-caps.

Some US members of congress wrote the Canadian ambassador on July 7, 2025 with respect to fire management and the resulting smoke from Canadian forest fires. The reality is that the increase in fires & smoke is largely due to human-caused climate change, and we will see more fire in the future.

Look I know Social Media is a hell hole where it allows rage bait and lets folks overreact for engagement.

But fuck this shit.
Accuweather is pushing a study that claims (without describing the data/methods with any reproducibility) that they are superior hurricane forecasters. Among their ridiculous claims is that they were the "only" one to predict disastrous flooding from Helene. Gory details here: x.com/accuweather/...

Are these double-overwintering?
Hot, dry conditions in the Fort Nelson area are reactivating overwintering fires, with smoke now visible.

Crews are responding along Hwy 77 & wildfire G90220 near the Fort Nelson River. More visible fires may appear on the #BCWildfire map as things evolve.

Stay alert 📱

Wildfire smoke and extreme heat can occur together: Preparing for the combined health effects of a hot, smoky future
Exposure to either wildfire smoke or extreme heat poses a significant threat to health. When they occur together, it may amplify the health risks of exposure.

Forget Canada — I don't think I've ever seen a poll shift this dramatic in *any* modern democracy. One of the most remarkable elections of my lifetime.
It's really hard to overstate how hugely favored conservatives were up until two months ago.

Here's the graph of Canadian polling between March 2023 and March 2025. (Reminder: blue is conservative.)

Those are months and months of 20+ point leads for Tories.

This is disgraceful. GFDL/Princeton is a pioneer in studying climate change, and one of the most respected and important research groups in the world, including Nobel Laureate Suki Manabe and others who are highly respected. To not only terminate their programs but disparage them is unconscionable.

Every private sector entity dealing with natural catastrophe / weather / climate risk is hugely dependent on the freely available data from NOAA / NASA / USGS / FEMA.

It's quality controlled. It's robust. It's essential.

The private weather / climate enterprise cannot function without it either.

I ❤️ Rutgers Faculty Senate.
This exciting resolution from Rutgers University Senate is exactly the kind of model I think higher ed needs: a mutual defense pact of, in this case, Big 10 schools. They call for member institutions to create a joint defense fund and make resources available to any member institution under attack.
