Dieter Helm's big essay in The Times ("The COPs have failed" 8 Nov) prompted me to write a letter to the editor, to correct the muddle that Helm gets into on international climate policy and the #COP process.

Below is my response.

Sad day at LSE. Conor Gearty has died.

He will be sorely missed, among his colleagues in the law school and across the LSE and beyond. A passionate scholar and advocate of human rights, he became the first director of the LSE Centre for the Study of Human Rights while continuing to practice law.

The talk builds on my new book (with Barry Buzan) “The Market in Global International Society: An Englisch School Approach to International Political Economy” (OUP, 2025).

Deeply honoured to be giving the Martin Wight Memorial Lecture at LSE, on Monday, 9 June 2025, on “Economic Nationalism and Global (Dis)Order.”

Based on my book (with Barry Buzan) “The Market in Global International Society” (OUP, 2025), I explore the rise of economic nationalism worldwide...

Interesting finding of corporate lobbying study.

Despite anti-ESG shift in US politics and populist backlash against net zero in Europe, more European companies are publicly aligned with Paris Agreement.

Another nail in the coffin for the UK's bipartisan approach to climate policy. Tory party energy spokesman hints at UK exiting Paris Agreement.

Straight out of MAGA playbook: talk only about costs of emission reductions & ignore or deny costs of global warming.

“True realism does not neglect liberal values or soft power. But extreme narcissists such as Trump are not true realists, and American soft power will have a hard time during the next four years,” Nye wrote.

In this TRIUM CONNECTS podcast, I talk to Matt Mulford about my new book 'The Market in Global International Society' (with Barry Buzan, OUP) & why the global market norm has proved so volatile over its 200-year history. Esp now during Trump's anti-globalist battle.

Just received a copy of this superb book by @jennifer-clapp.bsky.social. Highly recommended. A uniquely rich and deeply researched account of the power of the agribusiness titans - and how they shape global policy, from food to climate and biodiversity.

The Trump Administration's attack on US universities, academic freedom and civil liberties is unrelenting - and unprecedented. Unless you compare it to the actions of authoritarian regimes in other parts of the world.

Here are just four NYT headlines from today.

Worth looking more closely at how rightwing media in the UK have moved the anti-climate discourse from climate denialism to a debate about costs and timing.

The same goes for attitudes towards democracy/authoritarianism among Trump voters. Closer to Russian/Turkish voters than most other Western societies.

Sobering data points...

Shocked and surprised by Trump's assault on Western values and alliances?

Not so if you consider how his action corresponds to the values of his US voter base. Fascinating analysis by @jburnmurdoch.ft.com on the MAGA mindset and its proximity to Russia, Turkey, etc.

Kemi Badenoch has now fully embraced MAGA ideology:

universities are responsible for “poisoning of minds”, climate activism is about “control” of populations, and progressivism is “poison”.

UK political discourse was already bad but just got a whole lot worse.
