Retired teacher of English. Busy doing stuff. 📚 🇺🇦 🇪🇺
Full disclosure: no interest in pets, crypto and sport. Or Halloween. Or Christmas.
Two musical offerings.
A clavichord once played by Mozart; and a piano owned by Beethoven and subsequently Liszt.
Both in the wonderful National Museum in Budapest.

A couple of weeks ago I was reading the book. Now - on a trip unplanned at the time - I find myself in the National Museum in Budapest looking at this display of items relating to the events of ‘The Picnic.’ My wife says Fate; I say coincidence. Either way, incredible!

A terrific read. Not just as the history of a key moment; but as a timely reminder that the worst oppression can be overcome through courage, hope and no small amount of cunning. And when enough good people come together to do the right thing.

Very excited about going to see some of these pieces being performed by the Hallé Orchestra later this week, conducted by none other than the composer himself.

This book contains recipes (which should NOT be followed.) Mix equal measures of history, folklore, hagiography, mystery, tragedy, comedy - and you get a wonderful, heady feast.

Let’s hear it for secondhand/pre-loved bookstores. The chance of a rare find combined with a bargain … who can resist? And in many, like this one, a purchase is a charitable donation.

Dark clouds hang over Old Trafford cricket ground Manchester, home of Lancashire CCC, on the last home day of the 2025 County Championship season. Sadly, the people who run cricket and this club don’t seem to care enough about the traditional game. I won’t be back next season.

Yes, we bought one years ago.
Yes, it’s had a long period of unintentional exile at the back of a kitchen cupboard.
And now it’s back. And busy.
