In 2024, 80 countries generated more than 50% of their electricity from clean sources, including 47 countries that reached >75%!

The global share of wind (8.1%) and solar (6.9%) together exceeded hydropower for the first time in 2024. Hydro remains the largest source of clean electricity (14.3%) followed by nuclear (9.0%). Other renewables (bioenergy and geothermal power) contributed 2.6% of global electricity in 2024.

The proposed TAMTAM subsea cable connecting Vanuatu to New Caledonia (estimated completion 2026) is what I mistakenly thought. Thanks Jon.

Update: Internet connectivity in Vanuatu has increased slightly since yesterday. According to reports, the electricity network has sustained significant damage.
