I’m excited to find new-to-me trans and nonbinary authors.

Today is the beginning of a cause dear to my heart! @trreadathon.bsky.social is an initiative encouraging people to read books about trans characters and/or by trans authors, and donating to trans causes in the lead up to #TODV. For more info: transrightsreadathon.carrd.co #transrightsreadathon

I had to explain to managers at work that I will probably be unable to attend GenCon for the next several years, between the TSA crackdowns and the federal prohibition against transgender bathroom access (affecting airports).
Sharing with ALT text for those who aren't aware of the ongoing real world implications for trans people in the U.S.

The Drowning House by Cherie Priest (@cheriepriest.com)
is a haunted house tale. I appreciated the rounded, imperfect female leader. Priest made a relatable character & a friendship bond btwn a woman & a man by making them flawed & whole.

Friends tried to warn me about how much I was working for a particular company. A 60-hour week was standard, and I often clocked 80 - 100 hour weeks during crunch time.

I wasn’t able to hear them. I had to leave tech in 2019 because I was overwhelmed. I’m still not able to work without panicking.
take your PTO. all of it. use your sick days even if you’re not actually sick. only do work inside work hours. the most important thing to do when you have a job is maintain your dignity
I'm not sure which of you need to hear this, but:

If you push yourself to your limits and burn out for a company, you are trading years of your future productivity for minor gains in the present.

Burning out will _fuck you up_, it's like brain fog or depression, and it takes years to recover

What I’m doing: I’m reading authors whom I haven’t read much or at all before because algorithms don’t suggest them to me. I had a typical white girl public education that emphasized white men.

I did this a few years ago to great effect.

Kai Ashanti Wilson’s short story, The Devil in America, is one I’ll read again. I loved Easter’s “angels.” The depth of loss that even recently-gained freedom can’t replace can never be measured.

Our country elected children in their “terrible-twos.” These particular children have the power to threaten Ukraine with World War III while demanding that Zelenskyy say thank you (previous thank yous don’t count) and kiss the ring of Putin on Trump’s hand.

James Baldwin’s essay, Nothing Personal, is achingly relevant to the reality we experience today. We’re locked in our past, which we have altered from its reality.

Shigidi and the Brass Head of Obalufon by Wolfe Talabi (@wtalabi.bsky.social) has Yoruban deities formed into corporations while exploring the effects of colonialism and stolen artifacts. I loved the setting and am now learning more about the deities.

If I had a band or a label, I would do a punk cover of "No More Kings" from Schoolhouse Rock. And then I would gather a bunch of people to write a whole album of next-generation Schoolhouse Rock songs, with songs about Social Security and Medicaid and NOAA. I am not kidding in the least.

I finished Agatha Christie’s Dumb Witness today. It’s a lightweight popcorn mystery with an offensive title (the witness can’t speak).

Meanwhile, I’m about 1/3 of my way through Imani Perry’s South to America.
