Happy #LetterboxdFriday!

Just the two this week, but what films!

I'm already wanting to rewatch Persona to understand it a bit more...

I'll not pretend, I probably understood half of that, but my main takeaway is that is that it's one woman talking to her subconscious about the deeds of her life? Either way, this is some of the best cinematography I have ever seen and the performances are phenomenal. A rewatch is a must.

Starting off with an absolute bang!

Every so often we dream of escaping our lives - new place, no connections, a fresh start. But what if it's not as perfect as it would seem and you can't escape it? Melancholic, dripping in dread. Cinematography and editing top notch. A perfect horror.

Book 48 - Moving Pictures by Terry Pratchett

This time Pratchett takes aim at Hollywood and the greed, commercialisation and veracity of stories told. A fun cast of old and new characters. A highly entertaining read, but not top tier Discworld.

Book 47 - The Return to Edan by Philip Chase

An excellent end to this journey. By not adhering to conventional fantasy endings, it made this somewhat unique. The multiple POVs throughout the whole series really came into the fore, as there were some emotional character moments that were justified.

Book 46 - Carrie by Stephen King

A really quite simple story that's pretty gruesome. I liked the snippets of information from the inquest and medical professionals, but equally disrupted the flow of the story...

There's a lot to unpack in this short, but excellent film. At its heart, it's a Hitchcockian thriller, with a good dose of neorealism for good measure. It explores obsession and how it can takeover completely. The film also focuses on economic freedom and worker's rights.

Elements of horror and farce mix in this blackly comic drama about science vs magic. Max von Sydow's Vogler is both mysterious, passionate and desperate, it's an interesting character study. All in all, there were a lot of elements I enjoyed, but there was a detachment I felt from it.

Absolutely stunning film, the set design to the colourisation, just so immersive. It's haunting and beautiful and the premise is grim, but it all works. I didn't think the kabuki style would work for me, but fortunately I was completely wrong.

Happy #LetterboxdFriday

A solid week.

A decent adaptation of the play. Direction bland

Johnson was good in serious role. Rest didn't grip me

Had a great time with this Kurosawa. Fun

An excellent holistic look at the sinking of the Titanic.

What I really enjoyed about this film was how it portrayed the sinking of the Titanic by encompassing the stories of everyone on the ship. They maybe brief snapshots of those onboard, but recurring to tell their stories. The way the sinking happened still looks great.

This was a hell of a lot of fun! Tahei and Matashichi provide great comic relief, as well as showing the struggles and desperation of the poor in society, as they're embroiled in national politics. Two outstanding moments in the horse chase and the lance duel scenes.

Wrestledream tonight and my predictions.

Also Mercedes Mone has a segment, whether that's a match, I'm not sure. Either way, manifesting the wrestler FKA Dakota Kai rocks up.

It's not a bad film per se, but this felt a bit lacking. I couldn't buy into the relationship between Brick and Maggie, which is central to the film. The dynamics between the father and sons and also the sisters in law work really well. Direction and cinematography are bland.

The Blob - Not enough Blob. Great theme tune.

Touch of Evil - Welles shines in this film noir

Elevator to the Gallows - I too want to be soundtracked by Miles Davis walking the streets of Paris
