But that doesn't mean there aren't signals of racial bias, particularly when you drill down into the specifics of budgets or how often people of color tend to get cast in supporting roles. So there is improvement, but there is still a long legacy of racism in the industry that hasn't disappeared.

Directors of color tend to have smaller budgets than white colleagues, and the more POC on a crew, the smaller budget it has. "The lack of representation might be a blocked pipeline, but the lack of funding, that’s pure bias," said Jason Pollard, a film editor and NYU professor.

You can see this in Oscar nominations, you can see this in the types of movies that are made (mainly decided on by white producers), you can see this even in how films are shot.

I adore these passages in Great American City, by Robert J. Sampson. There's no gold standard, no perfect experiment; the best research comes from tracing out multiple implications of a theory and testing them all independently. That way you sort of triangulate on the truth.

There's another, also significant and impactful bias based on the skin color of the player. Players of color with lighter skin play at catcher more often, while players with darker skin are most often in the outfield. For white players, there is no skin color difference between different positions.

Finally, an element that I think is very important is the influence of skin color, not just race. Players of color with darker skin (measured quantitatively from their photos) suffered more severe biases. They were promoted less and they were even more restricted in what positions were open to them.

this also stuck out to me as one of the most interesting charts I've seen in some time. Video games used to be almost entirely an American and Japanese industry. It has globalized significantly, and you can see this in some of the best games this year: BG3, AW2, Sea of Stars, Dave the Diver, etc.

back @baseballprospectus.com with an article about how the shift ban rules changes impacted BABIP. It seems to have impacted--surprise!--line drives the most, specifically line drives hit by lefties.
