I came across some people loading a steamship in the rain with a mobile hydraulic crane and needed to scratch it out in pencil. Recording thousands of these little moments is fun in itself as well as good practice. I always take a sketch pad with me

Pencil sketch on paper. A steam ship in roughly 3/4 profile is docked. It has two large funnels and a life boat in the far side. The near side has cabins and a rooftop seating area covered in tarpaulin. Windows line its starboard side, interrupted by a turning wheel that protrudes out by a few feet from the main body of the boat. A hydraulic crane leans over the boat, loading a large crate of equipment onto the deck.

Sleepy Baby At Cruising Altitude

Wee one is extremely good at timing their naps and loves flying so far. I wonder what he’s dreams about. Probably milk.
Wee baby crashed out in the arms of their parent. Sketched out and lined in ink. We look at the baby from the angle of top of his head and wonder what he’s dreaming about.

I took part in @paulscottcanavan.com 's excellent workshop to push my painting toward where I first fell in love with art - the fantasy worlds I saw as a wee kid. I feel my final was an attempt to reach what I saw as a kid, of youngsters facing fantastical threats

I've spent the past 2 months working on a single #painting. This isn't it! I'm taking a few days off and wanted to paint a fun, loose and expressive #portrait.

Over 2-3 hours, I needed to abstract a lot of the features so I tried to focus on flat shapes and changes of hue and value to get a 3d read

A wee 2hr study I did alongside #studybuddies tonight. Just to try something a bit different from normal with landscapes and texture.

Scottish Water did an absolutely mad advert a couple years back that looks like if they were trailing a new series of true detective. Best bit is when they have someone sniff the bouquet of the water from a wine glass like it’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Working with graphite and charcoal on paper to look for more expressive lines for future portraits!

I paint in strong values and repeatedly carve out with a large hard kneaded eraser and sharpened, narrow hard eraser.

Wee painting of a concept for “character” series posters i had watching #severance. The central concept radical alienation from a coherent self is enticing. I went through a few iterations to find a space that evoked alienation and touched upon other themes such as paranoia and unknowability.

a month or so ago I #sketch up an attempt to paint Lucanis from #dragonage in the style of #dishonored. Both games have competing design solutions to characters so I thought it would be interesting to see where I failed.

I’ll post some of my thinking below. Wonder what others think?
Lucanis, head down and looking up our canvas with purple tinge to his eyes and a smirk. There is a menace suggested. The painting style uses broad, angular and overlapping strokes with little blending A standard 3/4 profile of Lucanis looking out to the viewer. The brush strokes are scratchy with a strong contrast in value between light and shade to provide a drama. He appears to sink into the dark background of the canvas.
