The healers had worked on Inga before she was allowed to come to the hall. She’d been to the bathhouse, scrubbed, anointed, and lent clean clothes. She eased herself onto the bench at the table, leaning closer than Dýrhildr expected. “You smell good,” Dýrhildr breathed. Inga actually blushed, and looked away. “Norse medicine cares too much about smell,” she grumbled, seating herself very close, on her good side. “Rather have a tuniq healer. And they want me to make a gift to the local elves.”

“If you’re gonna be loud, do it elsewhere,” she growled. The devilkin plucked at a string of her violin, tuning it spitefully. She threw a cushion at her, and Tyre laughed and dodged out of the room, leaving her alone in the dark. She growled and tried and failed to go back to sleep, tossing and turning until she begrudgingly picked herself up and went downstairs. The smell of breakfast hit her. She’d missed real food. Griddlecakes and sausage and scrambled eggs with cheese. Orc fare was harsh, dry, and rough. That was life in the North though.

A white-hot arc of lightning burned the air between them, buzzing through her sword. If she’d been wearing her armor, it would have arced all through her, and still it would have only been a tickle on her skin. By the time the staffcaster processed the failure of its spell, she’d closed the distance and impaled it. She grabbed the staff, any residual spell focused into the gem dissipating at her touch, and wrested it from its clawed hands, pushing the body back off her blade. When it didn’t die on the spot she stabbed it again.
