ideally i want them to look completely flat / 2D like how it shows up in studio / matcap lighting without any vertex weights gradients drawn, but a sort-of half-shaded look like in the second screenshot would be okay too. unfortunately bothmethods end up looking blocky on the render. any extra tips?

any 3D artists familiar with furry models know how to make stylized cheek / fur tufts like this that don't ruin the topology too much and don't look like crap? i tried the custom normals data transfer thing, but couldn't quite get it to look right.
