My colleague from Adobe Research John Collomosse leads research for Adobe’s Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) and has done a lot of work in this area.

The standard also comes with a verification tool that can be used to check for the credentials, even if the image is "tampered". Some modern cameras have also adopted these, to establish an entirely tamper proof pipeline.

These are the "Content Credentials". This is an open standard that Adobe has been developing for several years to establish provenance of content.
