Thank you to everyone organizing in Charlotte. As we saw in Chicago, you can send them packing, and we know similar efforts are already underway in Charlotte. In Chicago, neighborhood groups held “Know Your Rights” trainings so residents understood what to do if ICE appeared.

Agreed!
Every new piece of technology seems designed to invade what little privacy I have left so my life can be sold to private businesses and the surveillance state while also demanding a monthly payment.

Tip: In your settings, toggle the option so it always prompts you for alt-text whenever you post an image. It's easy to forget when you're on the fly, so let the software remind you. The text doesn't have to be lengthy or elegant; just do it.

I realize that tomorrow is also MLK Day and that so much good is being planned for service and community building.

Yet I can't help also feeling like I'm getting a paid day off to watch a national catastrophe begin.

I wrote about the LA wildfires, the GoFundMes of rich people, and the long history of disaster relief reproducing inequality.

Aid was historically seen as a way to ‘restore the status quo’. Now the actor’s bid for help amid the LA fires raises a question: who deserves to crowdfund?

🚨 After an inexplicable delay, the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals has affirmed the jury verdict awarding E. Jean Carroll $5 mil in the first of her defamation cases to go to trial against Donald Trump. The jury found Trump slandered her when he said she was lying about being sexually abused by him.

Seeking updates on the following things:

1. Are Starbucks workers still striking?

2. Are Amazon workers still striking?

3. Can someone please fill me in on the anti trans post/newsletter that Fredom From Religion Foundation distributed? I cannot find an original source on this.

Thanks.

Thou shalt pay Amazon workers fairly, for they are as close as it gets to being Santa’s elves. Without them, Christmas doesn’t happen.

Baristas on strike? Good. If Starbucks can charge $8 for a Venti Peppermint Mocha, they can afford to pay the people who make it more than pocket change.

The news is shit.

The news will be shit for another four years, often.

You are not obligated to stay tuned all the time. Breaks are good--necessary, even. You are not failing the cause by making sure your soul remains intact. Survival is enough, sometimes.
