Emet-Selch had watched the so-called Warrior of Light—Hydaelyn’s champion and the new plaything of the Scions—for a while, having decided to observe her from up close rather than at a distance. It was a gamble, of course, but how could he resist this soul? Having shed the mantle of Solus zos Galvus, the Ascian had been prepared to begin his long rest until the time had come for him to perform a new role. He had sought the comforting dark to relieve him of his burdens so that he might rest peacefully. He had been under no delusion, however, that it would be a long one considering their dwindling numbers. Between Lahabrea and Elidibus, he was all too aware of the threat posed by Hydaelyn’s champion. One that would have been rectified once he had his rest. Let me spend that time within my memories of her. Let them continue to be the fuel that drives me to complete my duty to the star and Lord Zodiark both. No sooner had the thought crossed his mind that something in the corner of his eye caught his attention. He nearly dismissed it, not wishing to get drawn into anything that did not concern him for the time being. But the need to sate his curiosity—a habit he had picked up from her—had him glancing in that direction. He felt a familiar tug within him as his Sight came across something he hadn’t seen since before he became Emperor. Her soul…Iris’ soul now seven times rejoined. The other half of his soul. Emet-Selch was content to ignore that feeling, to do as he intended and rest as he had so earned. It would serve her right to spend her days languishing without him so that she would know a fraction of the pain he had to endure without her. But it was at that insistent tug that he felt his resolve beginning to crumble. And the more he lingered on that feeling, the more he found himself wanting, needing to be closer to her. Damn you, he had thought. A memory from long ago had surfaced to the forefront of his mind—a memory that has always served to remind him of what was at stake, of what he had to gain with the Rejoinings—and he made a swift decision. With a snap, he obfuscated himself from his brethren and then left through a portal with the intent of getting closer to the bearer of his love’s soul. And now here he was, standing in the crowded streets of Ul’dah within its Sapphire Avenue Exchange. Even using his Soul Sight, she was easy to find. The elezen body he now inhabited had seen to that. He was quite lucky in his choice of vessel. It was the same height as he had been when the world was whole. Keeping that the same, he molded the vessel to his liking. Though not completely. While he didn’t wish to admit it, he carried over some of the appearance he held when he had been Emperor Solus, though he didn’t mold the face to reflect his true form. He’d rather not make a fuss considering this would be a private affair that he’d rather not have his brethren looking into. Sticking with the current hairstyle of the elezen in question, he merely changed the color of it and made the ears shorter than they had been. The maroon-auburn locks with white highlights would be a nod to Solus. His eyes, however… …they remained as they had when he had been no one but Hades. Using his height to his advantage, Emet-Selch watched as the Warrior of Light made her way through the crowd, seemingly lost in her thoughts, and in the direction of the retainer vocate. The Ascian couldn’t help but smirk as he had found his way into her company. He pushed off of the wall he had been leaning on and began walking towards her, schooling his expression into one of composed panic and urgency. He quickened his pace so that he seemed hurried and purposefully bumped into her. He had a part to play after all. Arya sighed once again as she made her way through the throng of people that filled the Sapphire Avenue Exchange, begrudgingly heading for the Retainer Vocate. She could have easily gone to the one in Gridania as it is the closest to Revenant’s Toll, but she chose to kill two birds with one stone coming to the Ul’Dahn location instead. It gave her time to drop off some materiel for her fellows among the Immortal Flames and to check in on her family back at headquarters in Pearl Lane. The stops had served their purpose—to delay her inevitable arrival to the Retainer Vocate. It was only at Minfilia’s behest that she found herself in this situation. And very reluctantly she might add. She knew her friend meant well, but she had carried on perfectly well without one before, and voiced as much to the Antecedent. But she also understood the reasoning behind it. Ever since the leaders of the Eorzean Alliance had dubbed her the Warrior of Light, an unexpected pressure was on her shoulders. In the wake of the success of Operation Archon, the Scions of the Seventh Dawn and the adventurer who had become their champion had become well known throughout the realm, which meant that they were picking up quite a few more responsibilities than they had before. In a few short months since their debut, Arya had been sent to every corner of the continent—anything from dealing with primals to being thrown into the world of politics—and had become overwhelmed with her duties. She had clearly been showing signs of exhaustion, for it had been enough for Minfilia to insist she employ the services of a retainer. She had tried to convince her friend that she would be fine, but the Antecedent was having none of it.
