Much of the fun of even having a royal family lies in preserving quirky, arcane traditions surrounding it, but this one seems as much about preserving sexist notions of coverture as any such traditions.

It sounds like it is incorrect, though, in precisely the same way it's incorrect to refer to a married woman as Mrs. Firstname Lastname (or, heaven forbid, Ms. Firstname Lastname) rather than Mrs. Husbandsfirstname Lastname, a convention virtually everyone has rightly jettisoned.

Also, this signals that Democrats will cave. In January, the GOP will know that all it needs to do is hold out and Dems will give in. And since the GOP knows that, there will be overwhelming pressure not to shut down again.
