Brendan O’Hea: What's that story of you and Howard Davies during Entertaining Strangers? I've heard so many different versions. Judi Dench: I was in a play at the Dorfman Theatre when I spotted Howard Davies in the audience. He hadn't directed it, but I'd worked with him many times and I recognised his shock of white hair. The play was performed in promenade and I knew I had to make an entrance near to where he was sitting, so I wrote a note saying, 'I suppose a fuck's out of the question,' and as I walked by, I dropped it in his lap. But when I glanced over during the scene, I saw that it wasn't Howard at all, but a much older gentleman who looked very alarmed.
