Lot of centrist sneering about the WFA being wasteful, but imo the reason this bit so hard wasn't really about the policy, but it being the moment voters realised they'd been had and that the new politics was the same as the old.

The funny thing is our biggest vulnerability is probably a military-age population who rightly feels they have no stake in the UK as constituted. If you want to deter the Russian bear, you actually should be spending more on welfare, services, infrastructure and housing.

Part of this is Senior Labour types are trained to speak in a tone designed for the left (fuck you, you get nothing) which does not tend to sit well with a wider electorate.
