#inktober2025 31) Award. This Atlantic Star medal was found by one of the Op Nightingale team at RAF Valley just over a week ago. One wonders on the recipients’s experiences & their reactions on realisation of its loss. Been slack with inktober this year but hope you’ve enjoyed the doodles I put up.

#inktober2025 30)Vacant. I visited the Nabatean city of #petra in Jordan last century and, like many a traveler before me, found the great Treasury to be vacant. The city looks as though it was etched into caramel. The treasures had sadly gone & the city was now empty and vacant. #heritage

#inktober25 28)skeletal - a skeleton of a skeleton - depicted at the gloriously macabre Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh. Time respects no monument even to time passing itself.

#inktober2025 27) Onion. The Reigate Witch bottle. This still-sealed Onion bottle (made around 1688) was found in 1993 in Reigate and contained 9 brass pins, urine, fabric fibres, and some human hairs. A perfect thing on the run in to Halloween 🎃

#inktober2025 26) Puzzling. Sticking pot sherds back together to show how the vessel once looked is a tricky puzzle. The results can be grand. We excavated this collared urn with @wessexarchaeology.bsky.social at Netheravon in 2015 www.wessexarch.co.uk/news/recordi... #archaeology #bronzeage

#inktober2025 25) Inferno. The doom painting of St Thomas’ church, Salisbury. A mouth of hell and demons that even Dante would have been proud of. Decided to add colour wash to emphasise the toasty nature of the scene. Oh and thanks to @profaliceroberts.bsky.social for the kick up the 🍑 x #heritage

The last Op Nightingale project of 2025 was sensational. We aimed to find more of the Llyn Cerrig Bach hoard AND SUCCEEDED! All finds are subject to treasure assessment so no images yet bar this ww2 medal & toy truck! #anglesey #druids #ironage #celts #heritage #archaelogy #veterans #wellbeing

Tomorrow we embark on the last Op Nightingale fieldwork for 2025, back to the sacred lake of Llyn Cerrig Bach on Anglesey, last refuge of the druids. Will we find more of this incredible Celtic assemblage as we did in 2024? Watch this space….! #archaeology #celtic #anglesey #veterans #wellbeing

So she’s finally unveiled! A statue of the author Jane Austen now resides in the cathedral close at Winchester with her hand resting on a book on top of her 8-sided writing desk at Chawton in Hampshire. It’s is the 250th anniversary of her birth. She is buried in the cathedral. #janeausten

#inktober2025 11)Sting. Quick one today as I’ve been out at a lovely folklore, art and archaeology session. Everything is about balancing risk and reward - for every sting there is the chance of honey!🍯

#inktober2025 10) Sweep. My dad introduced me to the incredible character that was Brusher Mills - snake catcher of the New Forest. He used to sweep the local cricket pitches to clear adders from it. By happy coincidence daughter was handling snakes as part of her vet training today. Hisssss!!! 🐍

#inktober2025 9)Heavy. Never found one of these but this is a Roman Lead bar called a ‘pig’. This one made by the Deceangli in Flintshire (hence the ‘decea’ on the side) for the Emperor Vespasian (hence the impression on the top). Weighing 6827g & made in AD76. #archaeology

#inktober2025 8)reckless Those of us of a certain age will vividly remember the lifting of the Mary Rose from the Solent and she now resides in Portsmouth back in 2005 the MOD also recovered the anchor from the vessel during dredging works for the new aircraft carriers. #archaeology #tudor #heritage

#inktober2025 7) Starfish. Starfish sites were decoy installations built across the UK in WW2 to confuse bombers. lit at night to replicate failed street blackoutsHow effective they were is open to debate. There is a good one in the Mendips for Bristol & this one at Doncaster. #heritage #archaeology

#inktober2025 6)pierce. Ok confession: I’m a massive coward. Hate needles. So am full of wonder for my friends that have been pierced for tattoos. Going back to prehistory & the most astonishing Scythian Iron Age tattoos: mythical beasts preserved by permafrost in human skin at Pazyryk. #archaeology

inktober2025 5)Deer. The antlered figure (and a deer) on the interior of the astonishing Iron Age Gundestrup cauldron in the @nationalmuseet.dk Copenhagen. Fingers crossed our team finds something similar at RAF Valley soon! 😂 #archaeology #celtic
