lol yea. i will say a lot of people in my grad cohort who got hosed by the academic job market just moved into developmental manuscript work (and didn't charge exorbitant rates) so i've seen a lot of cases where it really worked out, but now i expect the knock on effects of austerity to hose ppl

there was a time I think where you could hire PR people as an academic and tell them your angle was to become a talking head on MSNBC, CNN, etc. and I think in times of greater academic plentitude (mostly for white guys at ivies) this path worked, too

5k is crazy. its pretty common here to use research funds for development editorial work. and we used to have a dedicated fund (but its been cut, of course)

i am so glad you are ok. its wild! this happened to me around a decade ago. the way instincts kick in to jump is wild....when it happened to me i was not spared a serious injury but it wasn't *worse* and its because of the insane jump.
