Making new games for the Nintendo GBA E-Reader.

I post updates on the games I'm working on, and also little facts/findings on this unique peripheral.

Hoo, you could drive a bus through that kerning. It's just a nice reminder with physical things, you only get one chance 🤞

This photo has a bad, very hard to scan card on the left, and a good one on the right. My camera's flash is probably showing the key difference, the bad card's ink reflects back a lot of light, while the good card is much more matte.

She's about to play Doom on the e-reader.

Huh, ok, yeah it might be similar. I found this image online but my printer's foiling is pretty much this. I think it could be nice in certain situations, but I'm not sure it would look good on an e-reader card so I've shied away from it.

Back to running test cards again 🤞

Neither I nor the printer know of any changes, we fully expected the cards to print exactly the same as before, but they didn't.

The first image is a close up of a Series One card. And the second one is a beta card. Very different, eh?

I'm looking for people who want to help test Pixel Pup, an upcoming nonogram (aka picross) game for the GBA e-Reader. I have 10 sets of cards that I will send out to testers.

If interested, please read the details here

Hi everyone. My name is Matt, and ... I have an e-Reader problem.

(I'm not even sure that's all of them, they tend to just appear around this house...)

The Solitaire card shipped with an error on it 🤦 It's a very subtle error. But if you like "spot the sniper", here's one for you.

hint: it was a "royal" mistake

And here is Art Museum. Really getting my money's worth out of that gold frame stock photo I bought.

To fit four themes onto 2 cards, I will either have double sided cards, or more likely I will do it like this first image (very rough card, just to show how I plan to do it).

The four themes are: Entomology, Art Museum, DIY and The Nineties.

Art Museum's artwork is still to come.

The first Pixel Pup release will have four themed puzzle packs. Here is the third one, DIY.

These images make it look like there will be 4 puzzle pack cards, but in reality, there will most likely be 2 puzzle pack cards. I'm shooting for about 80 puzzles total.

Is your e-Reader label ... bubbly? It's probably just the plastic protective layer. I have found almost no e-Reader owner took theirs off.

I decided to carry the purple theme throughout the entire beta.

So not going to be starting the beta test tomorrow. It's now looking like mid week-ish. This took longer than I anticipated, as the big pile of failed cards in the upper left shows.

But it's finally all coming together.

Stupid printer :P

My printer ran out of ink, so I put in new cartridges. Official, overpriced, Canon cartridges for my Canon printer.

Now the print outs don't scan!

The e-Reader is basically a house plant.

Getting ready to start a beta test.

If you are interested in testing out the game, keep an eye out for an announcement here on bsky and reddit, which will hopefully be this Sunday 🤞

It's looking like Pixel Pup will be released late January.

This will be a small print run, even smaller than Series One. I will be running a preorder in December, and it's definitely recommended to take advantage of that if you want to secure a copy.

Then a few minutes later, this motion event!

But a few minutes later, I got another motion event.

Off topic post, but this is too funny to not share.

We heard a critter in our house, and we suspect this crawlspace vent was how they were getting in. So I setup a camera.

Yup, sure enough, chipmunk!

I finally got an Analogue Pocket. @turfmasta.bsky.social's extender works great!

The elusive Golden e-Reader!

A Nonogram game has two sets of numbers, above and below. My first stab at implementing them was two functions, basically "InitNumbersTop()" and "InitNumbersLeft()". The two functions are almost exactly identical, they just swap x and y in a couple of places.
