Repro workers are under attack not just from the anti-abortion movement, but from our own management. Last week unions representing thousands of repro workers sent a message to Planned Parenthood North Central States CEO (and Minnesota House Rep) Ruth Richardson: stop union busting PPNCS United NOW
To Ruth Richardson, Molly Gage, and Ocea Bicha: We are writing to you, as unions representing thousands of workers in the reproductive health, rights, and justice movement, to demand that you immediately cease union busting, reinstate Grace Larson, and bargain with the PPNCS Union in good faith for a fair first contract. Unions are essential to the fight for reproductive freedom and justice. Over 400 PPNCS workers voted overwhelmingly to unionize with SEIU Healthcare Minnesota & Iowa last July to democratize their workplace and improve the terms and conditions of their employment because we cannot live the full, self-determined lives we deserve without fair pay, benefits, and protections from unjust termination and retaliation. Every worker deserves a union, but it is particularly important, in this moment, for those who have been fighting on the front lines for patients since Roe was overturned. Ensuring these workers receive fair wages and benefits, sufficient staffing levels, and other critical workplace improvements to prevent turnover, is vital to making sure abortion patients and others receive the level of care and advocacy they need. We are particularly dismayed with your choice to instead engage in aggressive retaliation and union busting given Rep. Richardson’s role as a Democratic member of the Minnesota House of Representatives who has repeatedly represented herself to the public, including in campaign materials, as a person committed to standing with unions. While you may not technically be representing your constituents in your capacity as PPNCS CEO, it is still incredibly disrespectful to the people who elected you to be a strong supporter of organized labor to then work to bust your own workplace’s union. When your behavior is so egregious that even longtime labor leaders say they have “literally not seen any other employer ever do” the kind of retaliation you have engaged in, you are failing to uphold both the values of our movement and the standards of an elected public servant. Our movement cannot function without the workers who make it run. It is unacceptable that you are undermining care and advocacy at such an important regional provider. Reinstate Grace and bargain a fair contract now so PPNCS workers can focus on their jobs with the support they need for our long fight ahead.
