Renters' Reform Coalition
@rentersreformco.bsky.social
We are a coalition of 19 organisations campaigning for private renting reform. We want safe, secure and affordable homes for all 🏡

https://rentersreformcoalition.co.uk/
We had a fantastic time marking the passing of the Renters' Rights Act at our event in Parliament yesterday 🎉

It was a chance for renters, politicians, and colleagues across the housing sector to celebrate the monumental wins we've fought for over many years.

"You see people claiming that this Bill is bringing in rent controls by the back door - it's complete nonsense."

If renters can't challenge them, extreme rent increases will just become the new section 21. The new Renters' Rights Act will give them this right.

Many private renters live in damp and mouldy homes - one in five of which don't meet the decent homes standard.

The Government must announce the date for Awaab's Law to be extended to the private rented sector ASAP.

Our coalition of housing organisations has campaigned tirelessly over five years for the monumental changes secured in the Renters' Rights Bill.

This is what's possible when we work together 💪

The Renters' Rights Bill has been APPROVED by the House of Commons!

This is the final step before the Bill receives Royal Assent, which we expect shortly.

No more amendments, no more debate - renters' rights are coming.

Homes are the heart of family life - but an insecure rental sector is part of why young couples are putting off having children.

@darlingtom.bsky.social tried to appeal to delegates at #CPC25 about why strengthening renters' rights is pro-family.

"What happens when a landlord sells their home? It doesn't sink into the ground - there's no dynamite put underneath it."

@darlingtom.bsky.social spoke at Conservative Party Conference on why some landlords selling up won't be bad for renters #CPC25

Thank you to @matthewpennycookmp.bsky.social for meeting with us today.

Along with @generationrent.bsky.social, we discussed the end of Section 21 evictions and the pathway to securing decent standards for rented homes. 🏡

RRC Director @darlingtom.bsky.social on LBC News this morning explained why soaring rents are "a genuine social crisis" - driving up homelessness, poverty and costs across society.

The Renters' Rights Bill won't address this. The government must take action to make renting more affordable.
September 5, 2025 at 3:00 PM
Last week Zoopla stats showed average monthly rents have grown by a whopping £200 per month in just 3 years.

Out of control rents are pushing people out of their homes and communities - the government must put the brakes on.

The RRC's Paul Shanks spoke to @bbc5live.bsky.social last week.
July 31, 2025 at 12:58 PM
Asked for a guarantor even though you could afford the rent?

Excessive guarantor requests can discriminate against poorer renters - when the Renters' Rights Bill returns to parliament it should be amended to restrict them.

Our Press Officer Paul Shanks explained on @bbc5live.bsky.social last week👇
July 29, 2025 at 10:56 AM
Instead of listening to scaremongering against rent controls, the government should look at what works - different types of rent regulation are already a success across Europe, providing more security and better value for money for renters.

The RRC's @rosiedutch.bsky.social on LBC News last week👇

If the price of everyday items had grown as fast as rents since 1988, a supermarket chicken would now set you back £53.76.

The bill won't address this affordability crisis - we need further action.

RRC campaigner @rosiedutch.bsky.social explained on LBC News earlier this week.
July 24, 2025 at 1:57 PM
Excessive guarantor requirements are a tool for discrimination - thanks to Baroness Kennedy for backing our demands to restrict them in the @houseoflords.parliament.uk on Monday.

Although the amendment wasn't voted on, the Minister did agree to meet with renter groups to discuss further.
July 11, 2025 at 8:48 AM
Thanks to @ollygrender.bsky.social for shouting out our research in @houseoflords.parliament.uk on Report Stage day 1.

Our polling shows 1 in 3 renters 'always' or 'often' struggle to afford essentials like groceries due to the cost of rent.

The bill won't fix this - we need a cap on rent rises.
July 3, 2025 at 4:02 PM
When the #rentersrightsbill passes tenants will be able to appeal above-market rent rises at a tribunal. Opponents of the bill are claiming tenants will challenge every rent rise.

We think that's unlikely. But a cap on rent rises would be a simpler way of protecting renters.
May 16, 2025 at 3:09 PM
The #rentersrightsbill will end fixed term tenancies. And because section 21 evictions are also being abolished, tenancies will be secure for renters AND open-ended.

So no more moving home every year - but tenants will still have the flexibility to leave when they want.
May 14, 2025 at 2:46 PM
Our Director @darlingtom.bsky.social was on @politicshome.bsky.social podcast last week talking about the Renters' Rights Bill.

It suits landlord groups to claim that problems with renting are all down to supply and demand of rented housing. But what people need is housing - not more landlords.

We welcome the govt's plans to upgrade energy efficiency. For renters stuck in cold homes this can't come soon enough.

Landlord groups claim there isn't enough time - but they were the ones who caused the delays. Ignore them.

Last night the Renters' Rights Bill passed report stage - today new ONS data shows average rents in England are up 9.2% in a year.

The bill includes long overdue reforms, but it won't tackle this crisis. The government should commit to a National Rental Affordability Commission.
January 15, 2025 at 4:32 PM
Recognition for the RRC as well as members Shelter and Generation Rent from @paulabarkermp.bsky.social who is bringing key amendments to the bill, including a cap on rent rises.

As Paula says, as a country we must return to this in future - without action, affordability will only worsen.
January 14, 2025 at 4:58 PM
Thanks to @bellribeiroaddy.bsky.social for backing many Coalition demands to strengthen the bill, including our call for a Rental Affordability Commission, an end to right to rent checks and action to cap rents.
January 14, 2025 at 4:22 PM
Chair of Housing, Communities & Local Govt Cttee @florenceeshalomi.bsky.social shouts out the RRC for raising concerns about whether the rent tribunal will protect tenants from rent hike eviction.

This is a key point. Section 21 will end but we need a cap on rent to fix this loophole in the bill.
