Learning by rote gets you so far. This level of player doesn’t just learn by rote. Coaches at this level have a whole toolbox for developing players.
I don’t disagree that it was fairly straightforward play but lots of reasons come into play.

I’m saying football is far too complex a sport than to only learn by rote.

Villa started slow then won 5/6 in league prior to playing us. They were in form!

Just for balance, those 4 straight losses were from teams that finished 8th, 7th, 6th & 3rd last season, A,A,H,A. On paper we should have lost them all anyway. Better or earlier subs could have got us points in last 2 though.

I’ve actually had hope after losses v Spurs, Villa and today.
Good performances but didn’t get results.
A bit down after Villa because that was worst case of sitting on hands with subs. But once they came on we were in it again.
