I find that when framed this way, students still self-select perfectly reasonable new deadlines and turn in high quality work. They also seem to appreciate my willingness to put their needs at the center of this conversation.

Then, later in the day, as I’m getting some writing in, one of my former students barges in to offer me thanks. Apparently my class was his favorite his freshman year. He gave me the biggest hug and then went to his next class. Such sweet and affirming moments. Today was a good way!
