This is basically what John Adams said at the time, isn’t it?
one thing i keep thinking about is how there is simply no way to design a constitutional system that can resist authoritarian incursion if participants in that system do not actually care that much

Ted Cruz said he’d found $2 billion in “woke” science grants, but his team used keyword searches that flagged things out of context, like a grant to develop a device to treat severe bleeding that mentioned “victims” and “trauma.”

Rachel Maddow talked about the firings on her show: "...feels indefensible, and I do not defend it.”

"The response from Kutler, or whomever Kutler is carrying water for, wasn’t to fire Maddow, but to gut her production staff."
MSNBC's laying off and demoting of its popular nonwhite anchors is part of a compliance agenda, writes Dave Zirin. In MSNBC’s case, it will create a CNN-esque product that nobody watches unless their plane is delayed in Charlotte.

Yes, yes! It only looks like a sure thing after it's happened.
None of us can be sure what will “work.” You try multiple things and find your way in. Read some histories of the Civil Rights Movement by those who participated. They were never “sure” of what would work. Some campaigns fizzled out. But persistence, creativity, determination, and focus were key.

This is admirable and sad. Imagine if some Republican had had a twinge of conscience and switched sides at the last minute, and you were a Dem rep who wasn't there to vote, so it passed anyway! So their showing up was more than just symbolic -- but honestly, Dem leadership, this is where you are??
Democrats are showing up. Literally.

Rep. Pettersen (CO-7) cut short her maternity leave and flew across the country — with her newborn baby — to vote no.

Rep. Mullin (CA-15) went straight from the hospital where he was being treated for surgery complications to the airport so he could vote no.

The richest man in the world calls people who get help from government programs the “parasite class.”

But Medicaid’s beneficiaries aren’t parasites. Half of them are children.

If we’re talking about people who depend on government, Elon Musk is the biggest “parasite” of all.

Exactly. WTH?
Shutting off USAID payments is bad, but it's not just that: if someone (Trump, Musk, a lackey, whoever) can unilaterally shut off Congressionally-appropriated payments, they can shut off anything. Medicare payments to certain hospitals. Social Security checks to selected voters. Sky's the limit.
CNN with an absolutely gigantic story:

"Elon Musk’s top lieutenants at the Treasury Department asked its acting secretary, a career civil servant, to immediately shut off all USAID payments using the department’s own ultra-sensitive payment processing system."

Do you have republican reps? Now is the time to call. They only need to flip 3 to keep Musk out of your most sensitive data. Right now he may have access not only to your SSN and tax records, but also potentially whatever bank accounts you use to pay taxes/receive refunds.
House Democrats are introducing the Taxpayer Data Protection Act to protect Americans’ sensitive information & essential benefits like Social Security & Medicare.

If just three House Republicans side with the American people instead of Elon Musk, we can pass this critical bill.
