Again, I am disappointed by our leadership and wish they would revise this short-sighted decision. This program, like the diversity of our faculty, is one of our strengths as the leading public university in this country. You can't appease an administration hostile to higher education.

It has allowed UC campuses, including our own department, to attract rising stars and recruit them opportunistically before anyone else can. Scrapping this program reduces academic hiring and will do damage to our departments' future competitiveness in science.

What's more, right-wing attacks in the name of meritocracy are, as always, disingenuous. The PPFP has been an extremely competitive program with far more applicants per position than many tenure-track positions.

This, and the programs it inspired, have been relentlessly attacked by segregationist anti-DEI campaigners. It is morally bankrupt to capitulate to these attacks by scrapping a program that was a model for how to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in the academia in deeds not just words.
