Market leader Caribou retreated from downtown Minneapolis a few years ago, leaving more space for indie shops. Starbucks' cutbacks don't appear as substantial — but the shutdowns include some well-known spots. www.bizjournals.com/twincities/n...

Digital River was once among the Twin Cities' biggest tech success stories, with choice gigs like running the online store for Microsoft. But that was years ago; today, the company told Minnesota it will close its headquarters. bizj.us/1qmy3c

“Outsouling” is a pretty good word.
"Imagine a world in which an A.I. can analyze your reading patterns and alert you that you’re about to buy a book where there’s only a 10 percent chance you’ll get past Page 6..."

Fuck off. That's not empowerment, that's outsourcing your soul. That's outsouling.

Had to go check that this was actually true. (Also couldn’t believe that the CEO admitted that locking up products made people buy less stuff, but that also really happened)
Walgreens lost $200 million installing 10,000 video doors nobody wants or needs. We could already see soda bottles through the glass. What they should have done is install 10,000 video doors that all display Han Solo frozen in carbonite

Good thread that compares workflow, labor relations and management of filmmaking vs. video game production
just as an outsider with an interest in video game development, and coming from the film industry, it really feels like the game industry has no standardized workflow. every new project gets a bespoke production system with a lot of uncertainty about tasks, roles and who should be doing what
Why do video games cost so much to make these days? A recent NYT article pinned bloated budgets on the graphical arms race, but that's only a small part of the equation. The real problem? Rampant mismanagement.

This week's column is a spicy one: www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...
