Video: Scary conditions on Highway 43 where man was killed while cycling
It's a death trap, and it's the only way for bicycle riders to connect between Sellwood and Lake Oswego.

Montgomery County MD, the N suburbs of Washington DC, is now one of the largest US agencies with free bus fares. As I‘ve said many times, this only makes sense if the fares wouldn‘t even pay for the fare collection, which appears to have been the issue. www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...

I have a degree in Economics but I don’t fixate on GDP. In America, when we build a massive freeway, buy a car, fill it with gas, crash it, repair it, and treat the associated injury and cardiopulmonary disease…that all adds to GDP. But what did it buy us?

Final vote. 50-50. VP breaks the tie.

One single GOP Senator could have stopped this abomination. Saved millions of parents from watching their child go hungry. Saved the lives destroyed when Medicaid disappears.

They will all live forever with the horror of this bill.

Concerning, but all too predictable:

The NYPD's bike crackdown has only just started, and overreaches are already piling up. Police are falsely writing criminal summonses for crossing with the walk sign, and are possibly even engaged in entrapment, according to @nyc.streetsblog.org:
As NYPD's Criminal Crackdown on Cyclists Expands, It Grows More Absurd: Victims - Streetsblog New York City
The new policy has unleashed the worst instincts of individual cops — including one cop who allegedly entrapped a cyclist.

State housing laws are having their desired effect (producing more new homes) and, as a bonus, are making the worst people imaginable very mad. We love to see it!

"Emissions from cycling can be more than 30x lower for each trip than driving a fossil fuel car, and about 10x lower than driving an electric one."
Cycling is ten times more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities
Active travel can help tackle the climate crisis earlier than electric vehicles – even if you swap the car for a bike for just one trip a day.

That NYC anti-YIMBY video has got to be like deniable black propaganda from a pro-YIMBY faction. Like no way is this shit real

In some good news, my regional passenger rail service (Capitol Corridor) is lowering the Davis to Sacramento fare from a ridiculous $9 to a still high but more reasonable $6 (it’s a 20 minute journey).

This narrative that dense multifamily housing caused the LA fires is completely and utterly wrong. The culprit, in fact, is single-family homes in the wildland urban interface.

Building densely in climate-safe urban and suburban areas is the solution to the problem, not the cause.
High cost of rent is caused by greedy landlords & poor urban planning.

Rapid overbuilding of dense housing is not a solution. It will set in motion a repeat of the horrific L.A. Fires.

Cost of living is a problem throughout the country, but it’s off the charts in California. Why? Because of our obscenely high housing costs, driven by a massive housing shortage.

We make it way, way too hard to build new homes & that needs to change. 🧵

The systematic attempt by the Trump admin to delete federal data right now is a disaster.

It is a small, but important, consolation that my colleagues @urbaninstitute.bsky.social have been working like mad to save as much data as we can from across agencies—we have to do what we can.
