When I was a lawyer in the White House, I can’t stress enough how much we all cared about following the rules - the black letter law and the informal limits of tradition, morality and shame.

Merrick Garland took a cautious and judicious approach to the job of AG which is what Biden was looking for in order to re-establish some norms in our country. Ordinarily, that would be fine, but it was a miscalculation. We needed a prosecutor in that job, not a judge. We’re not in normal times.
