I’m sorry that happened to you both. I know that doesn’t fix anything, but, for whatever the validation of an internet stranger is worth.

ON PURPOSE

As a current assistant to divorce lawyers, not even criminal prosecutors or anything, I can confirm.

I’ve caught multiple dumb stunts pulled by idiot jerks while making financial-disclosure spreadsheets, and I’m not even an accountant, I just do the data entry.

You’d think that at least SOME assholes would cover their tracks better than that, but so often they really just don’t.

Something something adequate conscientiousness to actually get away with shit often goes along with a disinclination to actually try shit, I guess.

The firm I work for was representing the wife, and the lawyer on her case was delighted when I showed him the evidence I found.

(To be clear, I have nothing against sex workers. But men who use marital funds to cheat egregiously DO deserve to lose their asses in the divorce.)

Thinking again about the guy I caught hiring sex workers out of the joint account while on “business trips” when I was compiling a spreadsheet from divorce-related financial disclosures.

His wife knew he had cheated around home. She hadn’t known he was also paying for sex out of the joint account.

I remember people criticizing the Fallout games for having all these computer entries of people just detailing all the horrible, corrupt shit they were doing.

apparently the devs only crime was not making the entries detailed enough, and having correct spelling.

“I want to [break free] shoot [the moon and miss completely] you [probably think this song is about you]”

…yeah I can see it.

I may still disagree with the idea that the death penalty is a good thing to have in law, but, I can also easily understand how an overall good and decent person could want to see someone who committed horrific murders executed for their crimes.
November 13, 2025 at 8:19 PM
One is, effectively, “I think it is desirable for the legal system to include harsh penalty including execution for particularly horrific crimes such as this person committed” and the other is just straightforward bigotry.
November 13, 2025 at 8:17 PM
I mean, I do think there’s cause in some cases to interpret different based on the direction, rather than the exact words. “They deserve the death penalty” is far more reasonable a statement when “they” is clearly, in context, a serial killer who tortured victims to death, vs. if they’re just gay.

(Granted, “I hope someone dumps legos in their bed” would also probably not catch a mod hammer either since it’s clearly silly and a wish incredibly likely to result in real harm, plus being something that could easily mean in context “I hope your child acts up in an irritating way”.
November 13, 2025 at 7:59 PM
“I hope they step on a lego” being notably different in intent from “I hope someone dumps legos in their bed” in that, stepping on a lego happens bc someone carelessly didn’t look where they’re stepping and had bad luck, not because someone took a malicious action against them.

Creative wishes of misfortune that involve no sentient agentic actor except the person the misfortune is being wished upon usually don’t incur mod hammers, yeah. That has also been my experience.
November 13, 2025 at 7:35 PM
Yeah. A child of 5 should have very little concept of sex beyond perhaps a factually truthful but bare-bones answer to the question “where do babies come from?”

I definitely think “access to outside” is a basic right. Maybe not the ENTIRE outside, but at least enough of a piece of it to have a walk and look at a tree, ya know?
November 13, 2025 at 6:46 PM
Yeah, that seems fine, at least in most cases. There’s gotta be a mechanism for escalating roommate disputes to a higher authority and perhaps for some particularly offensive offenders to not get to have roommates either, but I would assume they thought of that.

I maintain that it’s not the same at all, but I have no desire to be judgmental toward people who are less willing to go to Lengths to see a good aurora in person than I am, this simply does not satisfy my own desire to see the sky do weird stuff!

Yeah, that’s actually one of the reasons I like this job, I feel like my work matters even if it’s heavy sometimes.

I think I’m this case justice will prevail. But I obviously can’t say much about it beyond “I feel good about which side my boss is representing and I think there’s a strong case”
November 13, 2025 at 6:11 PM
and if being a filterer of information for those whose exposure limits are more restrictive than your own is not your activism niche, maybe don’t.

Secondhand trauma is not necessary to be adequately informed, and acquiring it without useful purpose would be foolish.

Anyway, reminder that you are not obligated to expose yourself to that content, unless it’s your actual job (a reporter in the relevant sphere or a legal professional working on the case),
November 13, 2025 at 6:01 PM
I’m doing ok, I have not exceeded my limits. I’m just very glad that I don’t have to have the chat with my boss about why I can’t work on that case right now.
