why "tense"? why not just "exonerating language"? why pretend it something syntactic when it's not?

"bill hits bob" and "bob is hit by bill" both name the person who did the hitting. the latter is passive voice.

"bill shoots bob" and "bob dies from a bullet wound" are both active voice, but the latter doesn't name the person who did the shooting.

all of these sentences are in the same tense.

ok but "passive voice" and "tense" have specific technical meanings and people in the business of having opinions on how people write should use them correctly
