Yes, that's why I started leaning towards an actual VPN app itself as I was thinking it through. It would seem like it would be turkeys voting for Christmas, but it's possible. Some of them aren't all that reputable and would take the money I bet.

But adult sites won't generally care if you use a VPN and UK government can't tell every adult site around the world that they have to block all VPN use, since that would affect users globally.

The sites don't have to block VPN use. They just have to verify age if you appear to be from the UK. Some sites will block VPN use if they can, like YouTube and Netflix, banking apps, etc.

I know it is technically accurate, but it's still misleading. My gut feeling is that after a spike in VPN use, it'll die down and nothing will happen. Maybe VPNs will be asked to block adult sites by default unless age verified somehow. I cannot see a VPN ban happening, but maybe I'm too optimistic

That could be Facebook or Scruff or Tinder or anything. They might even have a deal with a VPN provider to give them basic numbers on increased usage. Having said that, I don't like a headline that says "VPN ban on table" when it's actually "Nothing off the table but no plans to ban VPNs".

They hide the location and who you are, but there are plenty of lists of VPN IP addresses out there, so a site or app can still often tell if you are using one. They'll have done a deal with some app maker to give them information on how many people are connecting to their app with a VPN

If it is used a lot, that's likely because it says what it says well. Just like a song can hit a different way at times because of the situation, nobody will be thinking "I know this one" - they'll be relating the words to your ex on a personal level instead
