Some more new music. Plenty of solid stuff. Have been worrying that I'm being too soft on grades (I am), but looking at Metacritic, there's been 79 albums with at least an average grade of 80 this year...

"No Other Land," the Palestinian-Israeli made film showing the destruction of the occupied West Bank's Masafer Yatta by Israeli soldiers, just won the Oscar for Best Documentary.

It can't get a distributor in the US.

Which tells you everything about censorship in the US.

“Longlegs” (2024) Hulu - Once again, gonna go against the grain and say this was just okay. Didn't care for Cage here, but Maika was terrific. 3/5

“Broken Rage” (2025) Prime - The comedy in the second half didn't always hit, but this was still fun and entertaining. 3.5/5

“Here” (2024) Netflix - This was added to Netflix, wanted to give it another shot. I like the concept of the camera staying in one spot the entire time, but this felt flat, and didn't really pan out. 2/5

“Presence” (2024) Theaters - Neat experimental movie, told from the perspective of a ghost. Definitely has a Soderbergh feel to it. Also, maybe the shortest credits I've ever seen? They were done scrolling before I got to the bottom of the stairs. 3.5/5

this is the "merit" two-step. first, you strongly imply or state outright that the presence of anyone who isn't a straight, able-bodied white man is unfair "DEI," then you argue that just because an institution is all-male and lily-white doesn't mean there is discrimination. that's just merit!
Opinion | DEI and Disparate Impact
The next step in restoring meritocracy is to reject the theory that proportionate outcomes equal fairness.

Exactly why the Democrats have been such a disappointment since the election. You don't tuck tail because your opposition focuses their ire on a vulnerable group. You support them and you double and triple down on your support for them because: it's the right thing to do AND because you're next.
“Once you decide that a single vulnerable minority can be sacrificed, you’re operating within a fascist logic,” they said. “That means there might be a second one you’re willing to sacrifice and a third, a fourth. Then what happens?”
Abandoning trans people is 'fascist logic', says leading feminist philosopher
Leading feminist philosopher Judith Butler has declared that abandoning trans people or any minority is operating within 'fascist logic'.
