I believed the facts were on my side, as was the power of the grunt. I stood up to the officers many times as well, saying, "You'll have to court-martial me." They never did.

When I did it, I didn't care if they court-martialled me, as that would have gotten me out of the field. We were so short-handed, practically a skeleton crew that protected their asses. I was their best point walker.

I refused illegal orders in Vietnam combat operations. Once, I told an officer, "You can't order me to commit suicide." He backed off. There were a few times when I interpreted an illegal order by changing it to an action that did not harm civilians and succeeded.
