Post-Its might be the greatest writing tool we have at our disposal -- especially for writers who are hesitant writers or writers who are perfectionists and worry about "messing up".

They allow us to ideate and try on new ideas, new structures with such ease. #english

Today’s sentence study. In 7 minutes, we noticed handfuls of writing moves. In 4 minutes, we were able to practice them ourselves. Borrow it! Try it! Start with, “What do you notice?”

Recently I had a coaching call with Dawn to figure out how we could make the student-centered work of her classroom more quantitative to meet the needs to IEP/504 goals AND show the progress all her students are making. #eng

My students are writing fantasy; I'm writing professional development. But sharing my own processes -- spying on myself as a writer -- opened up brand new strategies for my students.

My favorite move is to allow my inner censor to speak in the comments of my doc. I can't ignore that censor, so, to move forward, I just give her space. I shared some of my self-loathing with the kids.

Today my students are moving from TONS of planning + world-building to drafting. The very hardest part of the writing process for me. So, we talked about the things I did this weekend to move from ideas to actual words on the page. 🧵

Flash revision is an easy way to build a habit of revising.
After flash drafting (say, 20 minutes or so) give students the same amount of time to make their piece just a little bit better.
Then, have them reflect to help guide your mini-lessons:

A quick reflection post-flash revision not only shows me what to teach (most of which, I was planning to teach!), but it also helps writers make goals. It's a 5-minute reflection that gets us all on the same page at the beginning of a writing unit.
