Quick time lapse of me as a volunteer, digitizing specimens in the HKU Herbarium earlier this year. 🌱 Will post more NatHist /HK Bio Museum stuff here in the future!

In the meantime, any recommendations for things to listen to while working? Also advice on avoiding time lapse "flickering"?
Post a photo of an animal that looks Gen-AI but is 100% real.

Thanks everyone involved for running such a fantastic #Hymathon2025 yesterday! 🥰

Learned a ton and great getting to know/catching up with hymenopterist from all around the world!

See you all again next year!
HYMATHON 2025 SESSION 4 SUMMARY!

The last session!

Thank you to all the attendants and the organising committee!

It was a wonderful HYMATHON, with exquisite talks, showdowns, art entries and, of course, discussions!

Great presentation on such cool wasps! "Super beautiful insect" indeed 😍

Shame they were all the same D. burksi species not a new one, but very important discovery of their range extension all the way up to Taichung/台中!
Hello Bluesky! I’m finally here too!
I’ll be speaking at #Hymathon2025 about Doddifoenus—those long, metallic-blue “small giants” of Chalcidoidea.
My talk is 07:40 UTC on Dec 5.
Would love to see you there!!

Finishing off a lovely pt2 of #Hymathon2025 with:
- the Bush Blitz Blood Pact (may contain helicopters 🚁)
- Taxonworks BBQ party (sadly, no actual food 😆)
- ISH private jet (looks like showdown winners ofc🏆)
- Even MORE galls! (the gall of it all)
- Hymenopterist or Film Director?

Pt3 in ~3 hours!

Whoop~ Taiwanese wasps mentioned! 🇹🇼 🎉 (Hsuan-Pu Chen @Hokkaido Uni & NTU)

Species richness in Taiwan Bassobates (subgenus of Darwin wasps) up from 3 to at least 35 sp. (due to temperate taxa found in mountainous area of otherwise tropical island).

New # moves it to 2nd most Netelia! #Hymathon2025

Continuing #Hymathon2025 w keynote 2 by Andrew Forbes @ Uni of Iowa!

"For specialist insects, there is far more evidence supporting strong, ecological forms of reproductive isolation than post zygotic isolation"

aka. Ecological factors (eg. where they live) > Offspring repo issues for speciation!

Man, listening to sci experts share research (esp. stuff you don't know much on) is SO FREAKING COOL!

Like oh asexual repro of ♀s (thelytoky) is often due to maternally-inherited microbes eg. Wolbachia🧫.
We know cus we gave wasps antibiotic honey🍯, now investigating specific genes.

Like what? 😮

What's that buzzing noise I hear...? 🐝

It's #Hymathon2025 , a 24-hour online marathon of all things wasps, bees, sawflies and ants starting up soon! 😄

@hymenopterists.bsky.social

Will mainly be around for session 2 & 3 cus time zones but looking to catching some comp entries & showdown! 👍

Ever stumble upon a bit of everyday engineering so clever your brain does a double take at the sheer witchcraft involved? 🤯

Cus y’all this drinks fridge does BOTH hot tea ♨️ and ice cold soy milk ❄️.
In the SAME glass case.
With ONE door.

(Like you can see straight through the case & everything)! 😮

Thank you to everyone that donated. We're at over £600 in donations going directly to the survivors of the fire. I apologise in advance if it'll take me over a week to get to get to your requested doodle.

I'm at TaiPo paying respects to the hundreds of innocent souls.

Same, safe for ppl wondering (dif. 🇭🇰 area)-

Have a friend (safe) who teaches secondary around there with affected students. Saw smoke, school closed Thurs.

Other friends who work at Edu Uni down the road have mentioned things going online & a support center set up in a sports hall.

Okay, so obv. lots of feelings about the "US congress considers sweeping ban on Chinese Collaborations" Science article floating around...

Not going to reskeet it though: sorta discussed why a while back here. buff.ly/zhSVzLV

Instead, lemme teach you some insect order names in Chinese! 🪲🪳
Why?

One final quick talk/post (before I need to go to bed 😅) -

Jack Whisenant returns with the story of the Bible Fly at Cornell's Insect Collection, which was found squashed in the pages of a book.

Rather unconventional and unique way of collecting/preserving insects! 😂

Jess Awad (@parasitoidrex.bsky.social ) uncovering hidden treasures in the Naturalis collections ( @naturalis.bsky.social )!

Each unassuming box contains new insect stories (more in ECN's thread): from tiny galls on delicate leaves, to the tale of notorious beetle image thief Oskar Vogt!

Original Riker mounts by inventor Clarence Riker held at @denvermuseumns.bsky.social , presented by Genevieve Anderegg! 😍

The cabinets are just as intricate as the insects held within!Though lacking in collection data, lots of educational & natural history research value once imaged!

NO dermestids found?! How??? 😲

(That's honestly more impressive to me than the lack of broken antennae!)

Some more closeup images of the lovely Lepidoptera donated, as well as a newspaper article about the donation written in a local paper by former student.

Learning more about the prolific work of hymenopterist Lubomír Masner with Proctotrupoidea wasps & development of new collection tools!

Glad to hear my sewing hobby might come in handy haha - though mesh is super tricky! 🧵

Good message from Lubo: "Less computer, more collecting"!

Day 2 of #ECN2025 starting up soon! 🪲

Always looking forward to seeing some hidden gems from insect collections around the world! 🌐

(Btw shout out to @entcollnet.bsky.social for still having an online vers. of the event! ❤️ Means us folk who can't make ESA EntSoc can still join in on the bug fun!)

Getting "jump-scared" by moon cake boxes left and right these last few days. 🤣

Like whad'ya mean they sometimes contain actual moon cakes🥮 , not entomological specimens?!

Thread with context:
bsky.app/profile/rebe...
#MuseumConversations @ the HKBM
-
Q: “Uhhh… why are there dozens of mooncake/月餅/🥮 boxes stacked up on your desk? In late March??”

A: “Right... So you know how those blue Danish butter cookie tins always contain sewing supplies? Like magic? Without fail?

Well...”

Deeply saddened to hear about Dr. Jane Goodall's passing a few days ago.💔

Had the honor of hearing her speak last year. One of my science heroes, a wonderfully empathetic researcher who helped us realize that we are not alone in the world.

Thank you Jane for everything.👩‍🔬🦍

Not sure if it's cus this beetle's "Spiderman" colors are making me think of superhero movies...

But just hit me that Thanos the Marvel villain & thanatosis the behavior prob share a similar "death related" root origin?! 🤯

And yeah: Thanatos = Greek personification death, son of Nyx (night). TIL!
Seek out the shining leaf beetle, 𝘓𝘦𝘮𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘦𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢 (Fabricius 1792), in sunlit clearings along the edges of woods and fields. If you approach too closely, do not be fooled by its sudden, dramatic act. It will drop and play dead in a clever defensive trick, a behaviour known as thanatosis.
