I've been fortunate enough this week to speak on two panels on topics I really care about and with excellent co-panellists. My job is great I love it.

But...my main reflection is ohmygod Rebecca why on earth can't you keep your hands in one place?!

This isn't unique to the covid inquiry but it does highlight some key issues - this lunchtime I'll be joined by an excellent panel to discuss the covid inquiry & whether inquiries are a good way for the government to learn lessons www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/event/govern...

The Leeds NHS Trust inquiry is the 5th public inquiry to be launched this year, taking the total number of public inquiries currently ongoing across the UK to 25

3 of these are sponsored by DHSC (Leeds, Thirlwall & Lampard inquiries)

So the update is welcome but the CO team need to be a strong voice in the process, which means more resource. With more inquiries ongoing than ever before it's a huge undertaking to support these and collate lessons/ examples of best practice etc. and feed them into government decision making

Ages ago I did some research on Patsy Calton MP for Cheadle and I always remember this story about her going street to street in Cheadle with her surgeries!

Following a couple of changes yesterday afternoon among the junior ranks here is the latest state of play for Starmer's government after the reshuffle from @instituteforgovernment.org.uk 👇
September 12, 2025 at 10:24 AM
We have wrapped up the @instituteforgovernment.org.uk reshuffle live blog!

But not before sharing
1 Our ministers database is up to date and ready to use
2 Our analysis of seven things we learned from the reshuffle

(spoiler almost 1/3 of the government were newly elected in 2024!)

Last but not least, Liz Kendall makes the move from DWP to DSIT. She is a long standing MP, having represented Leicester West for 15 Years.

Kendall got her start in politics as a special adviser to Harriet Harman in the early Blair years.
September 9, 2025 at 5:04 PM
Douglas Alexander is another - not quite so - newbie.

He was in both Blair and Brown's cabinets and at one time held the top jobs at DfT and the Scotland Office simultaneously.

On returning to parliament in 2024 he's served in two ministerial roles - at DBT and the Cabinet Office - under Starmer.
September 9, 2025 at 5:02 PM
Emma Reynolds joins Starmer's cabinet for the first time as secretary of state at Defra.

Reynolds brings a wide range of political experience, having been an advisor in Brussels to Robin Cook, and a spad to Geoff Hoon before becoming an MP herself serving in shadow roles under Miliband and Corbyn.
September 9, 2025 at 4:59 PM
Steve Reed moves from Defra to take over from Angela Rayner leading MHCLG.

Reed has lots of hands on experience for the local government side of the brief, he spent over six years as leader of Lambeth Council and in 2013 was awarded an OBE for services to local government.
September 9, 2025 at 4:58 PM
Peter Kyle makes the switch from secretary of state in DSIT, to business and trade.

He's held four different shadow roles for Labour, spent four years on the BEIS select committee in the Commons and before entering parliament was a spad in the Cabinet Office in the New Labour government.
September 9, 2025 at 4:47 PM
Yvette Cooper swaps her role as home secretary to lead the FCDO.

She is a well known face in Labour having been an MP since 1997 and has held several key roles in government and opposition (inc. a v brief stint as shadow foreign secretary) as well as chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee.
September 9, 2025 at 4:35 PM
Pat McFadden is the new secretary of state for work and pensions.

He was Labour's national campaign coordinator before the election and served in both Blair and Brown's governments. He's known as a 'fixer' in government which will come in handy in DWP where some fairly thorny issues await.
September 9, 2025 at 4:27 PM
Shabana Mahmood is the new home secretary - and no stranger to crises having taken on the prisons crisis soon after the election as secretary of state for justice. She was one of the first female Muslim MPs elected in 2010 and has held several shadow ministerial roles.
September 9, 2025 at 4:25 PM
David Lammy takes the top job at the Ministry of Justice - picking up his old shadow role - after serving as foreign secretary since the election. He also replaces Angela Rayner as deputy prime minister.

Fun fact he was the youngest MP in the Commons when elected in 2000 at just 27 years old.
September 9, 2025 at 4:22 PM
Starting with a big winner, Darren Jones who picked up two promotions last week and moved from HMT to the Cabinet Office as CSPM and CDL.

He's been in parliament since 2017 and gained recognition as chair of the business, energy and industrial strategy committee between 2020 and 2023.
